Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant's garden.

每天下午，孩子们放学回来，总会去巨人的花园里玩耍。

It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach-trees that in the spring-time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them. "How happy we are here!" they cried to each other.

One day the Giant came back. 1-1e had been to visit his friend the Cornish ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years. After the seven years were over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and he determined to return to his own castle.When he arrived he saw the children playing in the garden.

He was a very selfish Giant.

The poor children had now nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it. They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside. "How happy we were there," they said to each other.

The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the grass, but when it saw the notice-board it was so sorry for the children that it slipped back into the ground again, and went off to sleep. The only people who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost. "Spring has forgotten this garden," they cried, "so we will live here all the year round." The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees silver. Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them, and he came. He was wrapped in furs, and he roared all day about the garden, and blew the chimney-pots down. "This is a delightful spot," he said, "we must ask the Hail on a visit." So the Hail came. Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle till he broke most of the slates, and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could go.He was dressed in grey, and his breath was like ice.

Early in the morning, a peasant came along and saw him. he went out onto the ice and hammered a hole in it with his heavy wooden shoe, and carried the duckling home to his wife. There, it soon revived. The children wanted to play with it. But the duckling thought they were going to ill use him and rushed in and he frightened to the milk-pan, and the milk spurted out all over the room. The woman shrieked and threw up her hands. Then it flew to the butter-cask and down into the meal-tub and out again. Oh, just imagine what it looked like by this time. The woman screamed and tried to hit it with the tongs, and the children tumbled over one another in trying to catch it, and they screamed with laughter.

By good luck, the door stood open and the duckling flew out among the bushes and the new fallen snow. And it lay there, extremely exhausted, but it would be too sad to mention all the privation he had to go through during that hard winter. When the sun began to shine warmly again, the duckling was in a marsh, lying among the rushes. The birds were singing, and the beautiful spring had come. Then all at once, he raised his wings and they flapped with much greater strength than before and bore him off.Before he knew where he was, he found himself in a large garden with the apple trees in full blossom. And the air was scented with lilacs, the long branches of which overhung the shores.Oh, the spring freshness was so pleasant. Just in front of him, he saw three beautiful white swans advancing towards him from a thicket. With rustling feathers, they swam lightly over the water. The duckling recognized the majestic birds, and he was overcome by a strange melancholy.

Reflected in the water, he saw below him his own images, but he was no longer an ugly clumsy dark gray bird.He was himself, a swan.

She was awakened by a shock, so sudden and severe that if Dorothy had not been lying on the soft bed she might have been hurt. As it was, the jar made her catch her breath and wonder what had happened; and dog Toto put his cold little nose into her face and whined sadly. Dorothy sat up and noticed that the house was not moving; nor was it dark, for the bright sunshine came in at the window, flooding the little room. She sprang from her bed and with Toto at her heels ran and opened the door.

The cyclone had set the house down very gently in the midst of a country of great beauty. There were lovely patches of greensward all about, with stately trees bearing rich fruits. A little way off was a small brook, rushing and sparkling along between green banks, and murmuring in a voice very grateful to a little girl who had lived so long on the dry, gray prairies.

有一天，城里的王子举行舞会，但继母与两位姐姐却不让灰姑娘出席，使她失望伤心。这时，有一位仙女出现了，帮助她摇身一变成为高贵的千金小姐，并将老鼠变成马夫，南瓜变成马车，又变了一套漂亮的衣服和一双水晶（玻璃）鞋给灰姑娘穿上。

她出席了舞会，王子一看到她便被她迷住了，立即邀她共舞。欢乐的时光过得很快，眼看就要午夜十二时了，灰姑娘不得已要马上离开，在仓皇间留下了一只水晶鞋。王子很伤心，于是派大臣至全国探访，找出能穿上这只水晶鞋的女孩。

3、Thumbelina（拇指姑娘）

作者：丹麦，安徒生。

讲述了一个只有大拇指大小的姑娘的历险故事。她的心永远向往着阳光，不向黑暗屈服。

文章以表现拇指姑娘的坚强、美丽。向往幸福的渴望，揭露了人心嫉妒、自私的阴暗面，同时也启发人们无论遇到任何挫折，都要坦然面对，要勇敢，要坚强，永远不要失去对美好生活的期望。

此童话曾被多次改编为动画片及电影，在国内获得很高的赞誉。

4、Little Ida’SFlowers（小意达的花儿）

作者：丹麦，安徒生。

“我的可怜的花儿都已经死了。”小意达说。“昨天晚上它们还是那么美丽，现在它们的叶子却都垂下来了，枯萎了，它们为什么要这样呢？”她问一个坐在沙发上的学生。于是，这个快乐的学生告诉小意达；“这些花儿昨夜去参加一个跳舞会啦，因此它们今天就把头垂下来了”。

5、 The Wild Swans(野天鹅)

故事讲述了一场善与恶的斗争。

主人公艾丽莎是个柔弱的女子，但她却战胜了比她强大得多、有权有势的王后和主教，救出了被王后的魔法变成天鹅的11位哥哥。

她可以成功靠的是她的勇气、决心和毅力。面对荨麻的刺痛和一年不能说话的痛苦，这需要多大的勇气啊。面对主教对她的诬陷和把她烧死的惩罚，她也没有放弃，一直坚持到了最后一分钟，终于完成了她的工作。

该作表达只要有勇气和毅力，一定能成为最后的胜利者。

6、The Nightingale(夜莺 )

作者：丹麦，安徒生。

《夜莺》是丹麦作家安徒生唯一的一篇以中国为背景的童话故事。

该作讲述了一个发生在中国的故事：夜莺美丽的歌声打动了国王，它成为国王的宠儿。

但不久之后，一只能发出曼妙乐声且外表华丽的人造小鸟获得了更多赞美，于是，夜莺飞走了。然而，当国王的生命面临死神的威胁时，人造小鸟却唱不出一个音符，还是真正的夜莺用婉转的歌声驱走了死亡的阴霾。

7、 The Ugly Duckling(丑小鸭)

作者：丹麦，安徒生。

这本书写了一只天鹅蛋在鸭群中破壳后，因相貌怪异，让同类鄙弃，历经千辛万苦、重重磨难之后长成了白天鹅。

As the legend goes, during ancient times, in the expansive open country of North China, there was a kind of birds called "rocs".

The roc was very huge, with its back like a big mountain, and its wings like a stretch of cloud which could cover the sky. When it spread its wings, it could break through a storm and soar at a height of 90,000 li (1/2 kilometre) in the sky towards the sea in the south.

A small bird called the quail1 bounced on the ground, free and happy. It looked up at the roc soaring in the sky and couldn't help laughing: "Hey, see how cocky you are! Look at me, one jump can take me over 10 chi. How delightful2! Every day I come and go amid these weeds and thickets3 and fly freely. Don't I fly quite well too? But, where can you fly to anyway?"

译文：传说，古时候中国北方的原野上有一种鸟，它的名字叫“鹏”。

In the south of the State of Chu, there was a hunter good at ventriloquy. With a bamboo pipe he could imitate the cries of various kinds of wild animals.

Once, carrying his bow, arrows and firearms, he quietly went hunting in the mountain.

Up on the mountain, he first imitated the cries of the deer to lure3 the horde4 of deer to come over, so that he could shoot at them with the firearms. The leopard cat heard the cries of the deer and came running to devour the deer. The hunter was afraid of the leopard cat, so he hurriedly imitated the roar of the tiger to scare away the leopard cat. Hardly had the leopard cat been scared away when the tiger heard the roar and came. At this moment, the hunter was even more frightened, so he imitated the cries of the brown bear. As a result, the tiger was scared away like the leopard cat.

Then, when the brown bear heard the cries, it came to look for its companions. Seeing that it was a man, the brown bear at once struck him with its front paws, and tore him up with its teeth. In a short while, the hunter was torn to pieces and devoured5 by the brown bear.

上山以后，他先学鹿的叫声，想引诱鹿群过来，再用火器射猎。驱一听是鹿叫，就快步跑来想吃鹿。猎人害怕，急忙又学虎啸来吓走它。驱刚刚被虎啸吓跑，可是老虎却闻声赶到了。这时候，猎人更加害怕，于是就学黑叫。结果，老虎也像驱一样逃跑了。

后来，黑听见叫声，就来寻找同伴。刚走到前面，它一看是一个人，就立刻用前爪打他，用牙齿撕他，不一会儿，把猎人撕成碎块吃掉了。

3、《狼与鹤》

There is a bad wolf in the forest. One day he is eating a lamb. Suddenly a bone sticks in his throat.

“Oh, a bone is my throat.” He goes to see a doctor, “Please help me.” The doctor, Mr. Panda says, “Sorry, I can’t help you. The bone is inside.”

“What can I do?” the wolf is sad. Then he meets a crane. “Oh, dear crane. Please help me. A bone is in my throat. I will pay for your help.”
