2022年北京冬季奥运会共设7个大项，15个分项，109个小项 。北京赛区承办所有的冰上项目和自由式滑雪大跳台，延庆赛区承办雪车、雪橇及高山滑雪项目，张家口赛区承办除雪车、雪橇、高山滑雪和自由式滑雪大跳台之外的所有雪上项目。
2018年7月19日，国际奥委会宣布，2022年北京冬奥会女性运动员的参赛比例进一步提高，参赛运动员的男女比例更趋于平衡。男、女运动员人数分别达到1578人和1314人。女性运动员在全体运动员中的占比为45.44%，创下冬奥会历史新高。
女性运动员参加46个小项的比赛，同样为历届冬奥会之最。相比2018年平昌冬奥会，北京冬奥会的参赛运动员总数减少41人，为2892人。
具体项目上，现代冬季两项参赛运动员配额减少20人，滑雪各项共减少41人，冰上运动共减少26人，无舵雪橇减少4人。此外，冰球项目新增两支女子参赛队伍共计46人，冰壶项目增加4人。
