Listen to the tape then answer the question below. Did the writer repair his lawn mower in the end? Why/Why not?So great is our passion for doing things for ourselves, that we are becoming increasingly less dependent on specialized labour. No one can plead ignorance of a subject any longer, for these are countless do-it-yourself publications. Armed with the right tools and materials, newlyweds gaily embark on the task of decorating their own homes. Men, particularly, spend hours of their leisure time installing their own fireplaces, laying out their own gardens; building garages and making furniture. Some really keen enthusiasts go so far as to build their own computers. Shops cater for the do-it-yourself craze not only by running special advisory services for novices, but by offering consumers bits and pieces which they can assemble at home. Such things provide an excellent outlet for pent up creative energy, but unfortunately not all of us are born handymen. Some wives tend to believe that their husbands are infinitely resourceful and can fix anything. Even men who can hardly drive a nail in straight are supposed to be born electricians, carpenters, plumbers and mechanics. When lights fuse, furniture gets rickety, pipes get clogged, or vacuum cleaners fail to operate, some woman assume that their husbands will somehow put things right. The worst thing about the do-it-yourself game is that sometimes even men live under the delusion that they can do anything, even when they have repeatedly been proved wrong. It is a question of pride as much as anything else.Last spring my wife suggested that I call in a man to look at our lawn mower. It had broken down the previous summer, and though I promised to repair it, I had never got round to it. I would not hear of the suggestion and said that I would fix it myself. One Saturday afternoon, I hauled the machine into the garden and had a close look at it. As far as I could see, it needed only a minor adjustment: a turn of a screw here, a little tightening up there, a drop of oil and it would be as good as new. Inevitably the repair job was not quite so simple. The mower firmly refused to mow, so I decided to dismantle it. The garden was soon littered with chunks of metal which had once made up a lawn mower. But I was extremely pleased with myself. I had traced the cause of the trouble. One of links in the chain that drives the wheels had snapped. After buying a new chain I was faced with the insurmountable task of putting the confusing jigsaw puzzle together again. I was not surprised to find that the machine still refused to work after I had reassembled it, for the simple reason that I was left with several curiously shaped bits of metal which did not seem to fit anywhere. I gave up in despair. The weeks passed and the grass grew. When my wife nagged me to do something about it, I told her that either I would have to buy a new mower or let the grass grow. Needless to say our house is now surrounded by a jungle. Buried somewhere in deep grass there is a rusting lawn mower which I have promised to repair one day.New words and expressions 生词和短语pleadv. 〔参考资料〕 ”新语录”—坚果 1) 今日看点 Where are the nuts? 点击本期关键词:nut 坚果 2)重点词汇 nut 坚果 疯子 头 螺母 walnut 核桃 peanut 花生 chestnut 板栗t cashew 腰果 almond 杏仁 pistachio 开心果 hazel nut 榛子 bolt 螺钉 nutcracker 胡桃夹子 a hard nut to crack 难以对付的人或者事 be nuts about 对… 疯狂 着迷 it costs peanuts. The man cracked his nut on the ceiling. He is a real nut或者是My family is full of nuts. Let’s get down to the nuts and bolts of how we are to achieve our goals. Hey, Susie I have wonderful news for you. 嗨 Susie 我有一个好消息要告诉你 Oh, what's that? Guess what? Your favorite basketball team 你知道吗 你最喜欢的那支篮球队 is going to hold a match tomorrow on our campus. And I have got two tickets for that. Want to come with me? I'm not interested this time. Well, Mary is having a birthday party tonight. You know it will be no fun at all without you. 如果你不去 聚会就没意思了 Come and join us. Maybe the next time she has a birthday party. What's wrong with you? You used to be quite enthusiastic 你平常对这些活动 about such activities. But now you seem to be a total stranger. Well, don't you know that we are going to 你不知道吗 我们明天 have a math exam tomorrow? I have to study hard for it. Don't be so nervous, 别这么紧张嘛 it's only a math exam. It will be a piece of cake for you. A piece of cake? Maybe for you, 小菜一碟 对你可能是这样 but definitely not for me. For me, it's a hard nut to crack. 这可是一场难应付的考试 a hard nut to crack 你知道这是什么意思吗 Elyn和Rebecca会告诉我们 a hard nut to crack,就像短语所形容的,一个核桃的壳太硬了,敲不开。 刚才Elyn和Rebecca讲到,a hard nut to crack可以用来形容人,比如我们可以说: He is a real hard nut to crack. The math exam is a hard nut to crack.. Have you seen Jenny these days? No, what happened to her? Well, she had her long hair cut and 她把自己的长发剪掉了 dyed various colors. And she has rejected jeans and T-shirts 她现在不穿牛仔裤和T恤衫 and is wearing weird clothes. Oh, is that true. I can't believe it. She must be nuts about that pop singer 她一定是对那个流行歌星崇拜地发狂了 who always dresses up in strange ways. Right, that's certainly what she is doing. She is nuttier than a fruitcake. You are a nutty person. I really like your coat. It goes well with your skin color. Such a pretty coat, it must have cost a lot of money. Well, it's not that expensive. Then how much did it cost? 那要花多少钱呢 It only costs peanuts. 你可以说 That only costs peanuts. No comments from the peanut gallery. No comments from the peanut gallery.
