A yard sale is a small public bazaar you host on your property (usually the front yard) where you sell unwanted personal possessions. Here in the States "yard sale" is a common term. Basically it's when a household gets rid of its unwanted stuff by selling it in their front yard. These are normally held on weekends and are announced by fliers posted around the neighborhood. A "garage sale" is the same thing, but it is normally held in a garage or a driveway of a house. I live in New York City and we don't have too many yards or private garages, but we have lots of stoops, so here we have a lot of "stoop sales." Just a few weeks ago some friends from suburban Boston were visiting and they had no idea what the term "stoop sale" meant, they only knew of "garage and yard sales."
