茶餐厅是一种地道香港食肆,主要顾客是普罗大众。他供应了中式及西式的食品,更有不少香港独有的饮食,主要有饮品:咖啡、 黑咖啡、港式奶茶、黑白鸳鸯、好立克、阿华田、柠檬加红茶、汽水、牛奶等数十种;小吃:各式多士、三明治、 蛋挞、面包、通心粉、沙爹牛肉包、餐包等;供应早中晚餐,菜式多样,包括中餐传统的粥、粉、面、白米饭、港式烧腊、叉烧,还有西餐,如牛油餐包、西煎双蛋、火腿通粉等。茶餐厅的前身是冰室。早年香小港只有高级餐厅(当时称为西菜馆或餐室)会提供西式食物,而且收费昂贵。第二次世界大战后,香港人受西式饮食风俗影响日甚,冰室遂相继兴起,提供廉价的仿西式食物。冰室当时主要提供咖啡、奶茶、红豆冰等饮品,配以三明治、奶油多士等小食,部分更设有面包工场,制造新鲜菠萝包、蛋挞等。后来冰室提供的食品种类逐渐增加,又与西菜馆和餐室的模式结合,演变成为今日的茶餐厅,提供传统中国小炒及欧美食物,后来更发展至晚饭小菜,款式可谓多元化

At lunch time, and sometimes at other times in the day, people in the UK often eat a ‘sandwich’. This consists of two pieces of bread and a filling. In fact, British people eat 2.8 billion each year – not bad for a population of only 60 million people! Today everyone eats sandwiches, but it was not always like that. Amazingly, the humble sandwich that we know today started life as a snack for England’s super-rich!
