Merry 是一个形容词,意识为：快乐的。
Xmas 和 Chirstmas 是一样的，Xmas是通过Chirstmas的读音缩写的。
Christmas 里的 Christ 用 X 代替，是因 Christ 一词的希腊文 Χριστοs的第一个字母大写写法很像英文的 X ，初期的基督徒因为使用语言为希腊文，确实常以X(ρ)来作基督的缩写。英语中将 Christmas 写作Xmas可追溯至16世纪，其早期形式例如“X'temmas”
所以，Xmas 是希腊文和英文的混合体，而非一个正式用法的英文词，不可以加上撇号成为 X’mas 。
在外国乃至现在国内许多商家在圣诞节期间，挂出 Merry Xmas 两个词的海报 ( Merry X’mas 是错误的写法 ) ，但在正式的场合仍以 Merry Christmas 为正确庆祝圣诞节的称呼。
