《玛德琳过圣诞》这本图书是 美国著名图画书作家路德维格·贝梅尔曼斯（Ludwig Bemelmans）所著，作者在27 岁时得到了一个与人共同经营“哈布斯堡王朝餐厅”的机会，他在餐馆的墙壁上画画，在自己公寓的窗户、窗帘和墙壁上画故乡的风景。有一天，美国著名的维京出版社的童书编辑梅·玛斯看到了这些画，便鼓励他为孩子创作图画书，梅·玛斯从此成了影响他一生的人。1939 年出版的《玛德琳过圣诞》不但成了他的代表作，次年还为他赢得了凯迪克银牌奖。
这个作品主要讲的是在巴黎的一座老房子， 藤蔓爬满墙，里面住着12个小女孩，不管天晴还是下雨，她们排着两行走出门，个头最小的叫作玛德琳。在圣诞前一晚，老楼房里所有人都感冒了，只有勇敢的玛德琳在干活，这时来了一位地毯商，玛德琳买下了地毯，可是商人却冻得硬邦邦，玛德琳让地毯商吃了药丸，原来地毯商是个魔法师，他念起了咒语，让地毯载着小女孩飞到了他们妈妈爸爸的身边。简直太棒了，12个小女孩和爸爸妈妈一起过了一个快乐的圣诞节，收获了好多好多的礼物。
整个绘本的画面线条不多，寥寥几笔便勾勒出了一幅幅生动的画面，人物栩栩如生，神态各异，幽默，诙谐，风趣，真可谓是妙趣横生，让人忍俊不禁的同时也深深地被小玛德琳的自信、乐观、勇敢、坚强吸引住了。
绘本语言简洁明快，画面清晰，通俗易懂，文中多采用重复的手法，来加深孩子们对故事情节的印象，正符合幼儿的生长特点，有些东西她们还不能理解，但是对故事情节会有很深的印象，对孩子们来说这就足够了，至于更深的体会要靠孩子们用他们自己去体会。绘本前半部分是中文版，后半部是英文版，双语版本，正是因为绘本具有的这些特点，所以孩子才会深深地喜欢上了小玛德琳，使得小玛德琳成了乐观、自信、坚强、勇敢、善良、富有主见和个性独特的化身。我认为非常值得我们带领孩子们一起阅读。

It was the angel Gabriel."God has chosen you to be the mother of His son, Jesus," the angel told Mary.一天，天使加百列出现在玛利亚面前。“上帝已经选中你，成为他儿子耶稣的母亲。”天使告诉玛利亚。 That made Mary very happy.这让玛利亚非常高兴。 Not long after, Joseph and Mary had to travel to Bethlehem to pay their taxes."It's a long journey," said Joseph." But you can ride our donkey."不久后，约瑟夫和玛利亚不得不去伯利恒纳税。“那可是个漫长的旅途，”约瑟夫说，“但你可以骑在我们的驴子上。” And so they went.于是，他们就这样出发了。 When Mary and Joseph came to Bethlehem, it was late at night and they were very tired.当玛利亚和约瑟夫来到伯利恒时，天色已晚了，他们都累了。 There was no room for them at the inn, but the innkeeper said they could sleep in the stable. So they went there to rest for the night.客栈里面已经没有空房间了，但是店主说可以让他们睡在棚子里。于是他们就去棚子准备休息。 In the stable were a cow, a lamb, a goat, and a dove.The animals were friendly.在棚子里，有一只牛宝宝，一只小羊，一只鸽子。小动物们都很有爱。 They let Mary use their hay for a bed.它们让玛利亚把它们的干草当床睡。 That very night the baby was born. Mary wrapped him up to keep him warm.就在那晚，婴儿出生了。玛利亚用布把他裹了起来，让他保持温暖。 There was no crib for the baby, so Mary laid him in the animal’s manger.这里没有婴儿床，所以玛利亚把他放进了马槽里。 In the fields nearby, the shepherds who watching their sheep saw an angel appear in the sky.在附近的旷野里，守夜的牧羊人们看到了天使出现在天空中。 The angel said to them, "I bring you news of great joy. Tonight in Bethlehem, a baby has been born in a stable. He is called Jesus Christ and he is our Lord."天使对他们说，“我报给你们大喜的信息。今晚在伯利恒，一个婴孩生在了马槽里。他的名字是耶稣基督，他是我们的救主。” The shepherds went to the stable, and when they saw the little baby in the manger, they were filled with joy.牧羊人们去到了马槽。看到小婴儿躺在马槽里，他们高兴极了。 The shepherds knelt before little Jesus. Then they went out to tell people what the angel had said about the newborn baby.牧羊人们在小耶稣前跪拜。于是他们出去，告诉大家天使报的关于新生婴儿的好消息。 Far away in the east lived three wise men.在遥远的东方有三个博士。 They saw a new star in the sky.他们看到天空中有颗新的星星。 The three wise men knew the star was a sign—a sign that their Lord Jesus had been born. So the wise men set out to follow the star.三位博士知道那颗星星是个记号——它告诉人们救主耶稣降生了。于是博士们出发，朝着那颗星星走去。 The star led them all the way to Bethlehem.星星带着他们一路到了伯利恒。 It came to rest right above a little stable.星星停在了马槽的正上方。 The wise men went inside the stable. They saw Joseph and Mary with the newborn baby.三位博士进了棚子。他们看到了约瑟夫，玛利亚和新出生的婴孩。 They knelt down before the baby Jesus and gave him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.他们跪拜在婴儿耶稣面前，献上了黄金、乳香和没药作礼物。 Everyone was filled with joy. Even the animals in the stable seemed to know how special this baby was.每个人都高兴极了。就连棚子里的小动物们，似乎都知道这个婴儿有多么特别。 Now every year at Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, because he brought the good news of God's love to the world.于是每年在圣诞节的时候，大家都庆祝耶稣基督的生日。因为他带来了上帝深爱世界的好消息。
