1894年伦敦大学学院的内科医生GeorgeOliver和生理学家Edward Sharpey-Schafer爵士观察到肾上腺髓质提取物对于动物有特殊作用。
约翰霍普金斯大学的生化学家和药理学家John Jacob Abel用绵羊的肾上腺提取一种晶体，作用类似于Oliver和Shafer的提取物。 Abel在1899年以epinephrin发表在the Proceedings of the American Physiological Society。
日裔生化学家Jokichi Takamine在纽约独立成功分离了肾上腺素的“纯净稳定晶体”。他申请了专利，以商品名“Adrenalin” 销售。
Abel分离的是激素的单苯酰衍生物，Takamine分离的是激素，但是后来证明实际是肾上腺素和去甲肾上腺素的混合物。
化学家Thomas Aldrich确定了正确的肾上腺素化学式： C9H13NO3。
由于Arenalin是专利名，美国使用epinephrine作为通用名。当时误认为Abel的提取物和Takamine的Adrenalin是一回事，其实Abel的epinephrin是无活性的苯酰化衍生物。
在欧洲，Arenalin没有上市，而英国著名的诺贝尔奖获得者药理学家Henry Hallett Dale爵士认为叫epinephrine的提取物和叫adrenaline的提取物不同，故采用了adrenaline作为了通用名。
因此，肾上腺素就有了adrenaline和epinephrine两个名字。
