培根肉是猪肉，一般就是猪的肋条肉或者是背脊肉，这两种肉也就是我们常说的五花肉和里脊肉了。而且是烟熏制作出来的，具体来说，其实也就跟我们国家的烟熏腊肉是同一种，只是因为做法工艺的不一样，从而味道略有不同而已。
至于它为什么要叫培根，这是因为它因为名字叫做“Bacon”，音译过来就是培根。虽然这个名字看起来就高大上，但意思就比较俗了，也就是“腌制猪肉”而已（所以说，我们这边的腊肉其实也是可以叫做培根肉的）。
