The BBC was the world's first national broadcasting organisation[8] and was founded on 18 October 1922 as the British Broadcasting Company Ltd. The original company was founded in 1922[9] by a group of six telecommunications companies—Marconi, Radio Communication Company, Metropolitan-Vickers, General Electric, Western Electric, and British Thomson-Houston[10]—to broadcast experimental radio services. The first transmission was on 14 November of that year, from station 2LO, located at Marconi House, London.[11]The British Broadcasting Company Ltd was created by the British General Post Office (GPO) and John Reith applied for a job with the existing company and later became its General Manager. The company was wound-up and on 1 January 1927[12] a new non-commercial entity called the British Broadcasting Corporation established under a Royal Charter became successor in interest.

在BBC建立之前，已经有很多私人公司尝试在英国做电台广播。根据1904年的无线电法案，英国邮政局负责颁发电台广播牌照。1919年，由于收到很多军队对过多广播而干扰军事通讯的投诉，邮政局停止发出牌照。
於是，1920年代初期，广播电台数量骤减，越来越多人要求成立一个国家广播电台。一个由无线电收音机制造商组成的委员会经过几个月的讨论，最终提出一个方案，BBC由此诞生。
