十二星座即黄道十二宫，是占星学描述太阳在天球上经过黄道的十二个区域，包括白羊座、金牛座、双子座、巨蟹座、狮子座、室女座、天秤座、天蝎座、人马座、摩羯座、宝瓶座、双鱼座，虽然蛇夫座也被黄道经过，但不属占星学所使用的黄道十二宫之列，在占星学的黄道十二宫定义只是指在黄道带上十二个均分的区域，不同于天文学上的黄道星座。

古代为了要方便在航海时辨别方位与观测天象，於是将散布在天上的星星运用想像力把它们连结起来，有一半是在古时候就已命名了，其命名的方式有依照古文明的神话与形状的附会。另一半是近代才命名，经常用航海的仪器来命名。
