What about his personality—do you have any impressions of him as a human being? Winston Churchill—His Other Life Mary Soames My father, Winston Churchill, began his love affair with painting in his 40s, amid disastrous circumstances. As First Lord of the Admiralty in 1915, he had been deeply involved in a campaign in the Dardanelles that could have shortened the course of a bloody world war. But when the mission failed, with great loss of life, Churchill paid the price, both publicly and privately: He was removed from the Admiralty and lost his position of political influence. Overwhelmed by the disaster — "I thought he would die of grief," said his wife, Clementine — he retired with his family to Hoe Farm, a country retreat in Surrey. There, as Churchill later recalled, "The muse of painting came to my rescue!" One day when he was wandering in the garden, he chanced upon his sister-in-law sketching with watercolours. He watched her for a few minutes, then borrowed her brush and tried his hand — and the muse worked her magic. From that day forward, Winston was in love with painting. Delighted with anything that distracted Winston from the dark thoughts that overwhelmed him, Clementine rushed off to buy whatever paints and materials she could find. Watercolours, oil paints, paper, canvas — Hoe Farm was soon filled with everything a painter could want or need. Painting in oils turned out to be Winston's great love — but the first steps were strangely difficult. He contemplated the blank whiteness of his first canvas with unaccustomed nervousness. He later recalled: "Very hesitantly I selected a tube of blue paint, and with infinite precaution made a mark about as big as a bean on the snow-white field. At that moment I heard the sound of a motorcar in the drive and threw down my brush in a panic. I was even more alarmed when I saw who stepped from the car: the wife of Sir John Lavery, the celebrated painter who lived nearby. "'Painting!' she declared. 'What fun. But what are you waiting for? Let me have the brush — the big one.' She plunged into the paints and before I knew it, she had swept several fierce strokes and slashes of blue on the absolutely terrified canvas. Anyone could see it could not hit back. I hesitated no more. I seized the largest brush and fell upon my wretched victim with wild fury. I have never felt any fear of a canvas since." Lavery, who later tutored Churchill in his art, said of his unusual pupil's artistic abilities: "Had he chosen painting instead of politics, he would have been a great master with the brush." In painting, Churchill had discovered a companion with whom he was to walk for the greater part of his life. Painting would be his comfort when, in 1921, the death of his mother was followed two months later by the loss of his and Clementine's beloved three-year-old daughter, Marigold. Overcome by grief, Winston took refuge at the home of friends in Scotland — and in his painting. He wrote to Clementine: "I went out and painted a beautiful river in the afternoon light with red and golden hills in the background. Many loving thoughts.... Alas, I keep feeling the hurt of Marigold." Life and love and hope slowly revived. In September 1922 another child was born to Clementine and Winston: myself. In the same year, Winston bought Chartwell, the beloved home he was to paint in all its different aspects for the next 40 years. My father must have felt a glow of satisfaction when in the mid-1920s he won first prize in a prestigious amateur art exhibition held in London. Entries were anonymous, and some of the judges insisted that Winston's picture — one of his first of Chartwell — was the work of a professional, not an amateur, and should be disqualified. But in the end, they agreed to rely on the artist's honesty and were delighted when they learned that the picture had been painted by Churchill. Historians have called the decade after 1929, when Winston again fell from office, his barren years. Politically barren they may have been, as his lonely voice struggled to awaken Britain to the menace of Hitler, but artistically those years bore abundant fruit: of the 500-odd Churchill canvases in existence, roughly half date from 1930 to 1939. Painting remained a joy to Churchill to the end of his life. "Happy are the painters," he had written in his book Painting as a Pastime, "for they shall not be lonely. Light and colour, peace and hope, will keep them company to the end of the day." And so it was for my father. As the smoke evaporating, stop the roaring sound of guns, focused on the vision of the people around the world the Iraq war was finally over. Struggle victory in people joy also see yourself wound, but the people have never failed lost their past brilliance. Peace-loving people, again saw that the brutality of war! The war, it is enough to destroy the worst, the devil, and when it can disappear? Those with the right to other countries, huge really appeal to force, also the country into war, rarely can really taste of the bitter war brings, and for ordinary common people, war to bring them forever is unfortunate. The twentieth century is a century of change the world also changing rapidly, this century has technology, art achievement than previously any era. However, this century the complexity of the political and economic changes that war become more frequently by leaps and bounds science and technology make war become more terrible, in the full of brilliant century, unprecedented cruel war so that people in the enjoy great spiritual and material life at the same time, experienced and bloody and terrorist calamity! The 19 th century, those with large colonies, economic rapid development of the capitalist countries began to rise, to the beginning of the twentieth century, the contradiction of them increasingly acute, and finally led to the human history of the first world war broke out. Humans also first had a worldwide unprecedented melee! In 1914, with a few shot of sarajevo, Germany, Britain, Austria, France, Russia and the United States, and a few big powers launched an unprecedented scuffle, in the holocaust, the new invention of tanks, planes, submarine even poison gas and other weapons come on stage in succession, the people of mutual slaughter become more quickly, more than 2000 lives in the first world war was unbearably hot! In people is still in a war of the breathing in the human are all looking forward to peace will come on when the terrorist in human history of the evil--the second world war ii in the dark over the earth has been filled. The global economic crisis over all the people's minds, in Germany, Italy and Japan, lose reason people holding the devil for god, as the madman idols. A post-war only 20 years, Germany, Japan and Italy, the three fascist country produced a killing human butcher's knife, launched the second world war ii. The whole earth in panic! Ancient Europa was war destroyed, the vastness of the Chinese in the disaster cry, the Soviet union, Africa flame rolling grassland desert crazy ShaFei dance, the Atlantic sinister murderous look under the Pacific Ocean, throws tao day! More than 60 countries around the world at war, more than 5000 people were killed, direct material loss in more than $4 trillion. In 1945, in Sue, us, UK, medium the world antifascist country fought bravely and full blow, the fascist finally overturned thoroughly!!!! Mussolini was BaoShi street! Hitler in the basement suicide! General hideki tojo, be on the gallows. The three crime tao day war culprit finally got their due ashamed end! But the die a tragic death in 4 million jews in the auschwitz death camp, the die a tragic death in nanjing 300000 Chinese people, and that was the atomic bomb destroyed of Japanese, their life is always in the devastation of the stay terrorist moment! World war ii finally came to an end, the United Nations and the establishment of many, many post-war independent country make people see the real peace! However, through the second world war, human beings have had enough to make this world a destroy the terrorist weapons several times! Lasting peace or slim! In war gain maximum benefit of the United States, and the so-called socialist boss of the Soviet union, in the era of peace should enjoy the world started: "cold war", again and again that the clear see, the postwar peace era, is actually the big powers to fight era, but still full of the whole! At the end of 80 s, 90 s, eastern Europe change, unification, the collapse of the Soviet union, great changes to the pattern of the world, no opponent's America is even more sense to me! In the 1991 gulf war, the United States first won the postwar mass local war, to give to those "refuses to" the country a run! Th century, the renewable disturbance to kosovo as an excuse, to the yugoslav federation launched a massive air strikes, even China's ambassador to south embassy attacks have become the object of wanton it! When people with great joy, listening to the new moments of one thousand, the 21 st century, war has also with people to the new century, the israeli-palestinian conflict are growing, the 911 terrorist attacks on the United States to once again sending troops to Asia, the Afghan war just dissipates, over Iraq and set off the alarm...... Good people can not help but ask, is this why? Why does humanity killed each other. Why war never aside, why have no permanent peace? When human can learn to real tolerance and reason! The starting point of the stand in the new century, we look back war, war, more peace to look forward to! Peace-loving people all hope that our world is a brothers and sisters love, mutual love the brotherhood of all the world. I believe that, one day, people will really know love, really know "peace and development", the real abandoned force, make this blue planet really as a common humanity has beautiful home!
