保时捷的历史可追溯至1900年，第一部以保时捷为名的汽车——Lohner-Porsche正式登场并造成轰动。这部双座跑车是由费迪南德·保时捷(FerdinandPorsche,以下简称大保时捷)设计,当时才是二十五岁的大保时捷受聘于Lohner车厂担任设计师。在这里他已显示了出众的才能。大保时捷1875年出生于奥地利，父亲是一个白铁工。费迪南德从小就喜欢干白铁工的话，同时对电工也感兴趣，1890年开始从事电动国玫汽油电动车的开发工作。

GT意思是高性能巡游者，GT跑车是高性能跑车。
GT：拉丁文GranTurismo，英文翻译为GrandTourer，Grand的意思是高性能，而Tourer的意思是旅行者、巡游者的意思。GrandTourer加在一起，其实是解作高性能跑车。
在赛车界中，GT就是被指为拥有大马力动力输出，同时有车顶设计的双门双人所乘坐的超级跑车(开篷跑车不能算为GT赛车)因此GT的中文名称或许应该称之为世界上最顶级的超级跑车。

远在欧洲尚未有汽车的年代中，GrandTouring在当时是解作长途旅行时所使用的大型马车的车厢。但是现在随着时代不断的演进与变迁，马车早已经被汽车所淘汰，在20世纪60年代的汽车普遍不能胜任长途旅行的工作，机械可靠程度很低。
由此出现了一批高性能高可靠性的大马力跑车，被称为GT，而GrandTouring的意思也就转变为大马力的汽车，人类汽车历史上只要是能被称为GT的车型，必不是流俗之辈，现在GT已被泛指为高性能跑车。
