秘书处大楼是一栋玻璃面的39层板式建筑， 联合国总部由于其四四方方的长方体外形而被称为“火柴盒”，这是由包括梁启超之子建筑家梁思成在内的世界10位建筑师共同讨论设计的。秘书处大楼前方的150多个旗杆，悬挂着联合国成员国的国旗，主旗杆上则是蓝色的联合国旗帜。
