Soy food good for womenWomen who ate soy regularly as children have a lower risk of breast cancer, American researchers report. And men who eat fish several times a week have a lower risk of colon cancer, a second team of researchers have told the American Association for Cancer Research. The studies add to a growing body of evidence about the role of diet in cancer. Cancer experts now believe that up to two-thirds of all cancers come from lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet and lack of exercise. The US National Cancer Institute and researchers at the University of Hawaii found that women who ate the most soy-based foods, such as tofu and miso, when aged 5 to 11, reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by 58 per cent. It was not clear how soy might prevent cancer, though compounds in soy called isoflavones have estrogen-like effects. A second study showed that men who ate fish at least five times a week had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing colorectal cancer compared with men who ate fish less than once a week. Many kinds of fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which interfere with the cyclooxygenase-2 or COX-2 enzyme. COX-2 affects inflammation, which may play a role in tumour growth. If you're middle-aged and your memory's not what it used to be, check the bathroom scale, researchers warned, suggesting overweight people tend to score more poorly on tests of memory than their thinner peers do. The findings suggest that a heavier weight in middle age may mean a higher risk of dementia later in life. Reporting in the journal Neurology, the researchers speculated that higher rates of cardiovascular disease or diabetes might help explain the link. But it's also possible that substances produced by fat cells, such as the hormone leptin, have direct effects on the brain. The study compared mental abilities to body mass index (BMI), a measurement of weight in relation to height used to define overweight and obesity. A BMI of 25 or more indicates overweight, and 30 or more is obese. The study also investigated the relationships between BMI and cognitive function in 2,223 healthy men and women between the ages of 32 and 62 in France through the use of four cognitive tests. The study found a higher BMI was associated with lower cognitive test scores. Results from a test involving word memory recall show people with a BMI of 20 remembered an average of nine out of 16 words, while people with a BMI of 30 remembered an average of seven out of 16 words. People who do not get enough sleep are more than twice as likely to die of heart disease, according to a large British study released Monday.Although the reasons are unclear, researchers said lack of sleep appeared to be linked to increased blood pressure, which is known to raise the risk of heart attacks and stroke.A 17-year analysis of 10,000 government workers showed those who cut their sleep from seven hours a night to five or less faced a 1.7-fold increased risk of death from all causes and more than double the risk of cardiovascular death. The findings highlight a danger in busy modern lifestyles, Francesco Cappuccio, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Warwick's medical school, told the annual conference of the British Sleep Society in Cambridge."A third of the population of the UK and over 40 percent in the US regularly sleep less than five hours a night, so it is not a trivial problem," he told reporters.Previous research has highlighted the potential health risks of shift work and disrupted sleep. But the study by Cappuccio and colleagues, which was supported by British government and US funding, is the first to link duration of sleep and mortality rates. The study looked at sleep patterns of participants aged 35-55 at two points in their lives - 1985-88 and 1992-93 - and then tracked their mortality rates until 2004.The results were adjusted to take account of other possible risk factors such as initial age, sex, smoking and alcohol consumption, body mass index, blood pressure and cholesterol.Cappuccio said it was possible that longer sleeping could be related to other health problems such as depression or cancer-related fatigue."In terms of prevention, our findings indicate that consistently sleeping around seven hours per night is optimal for health," he said.(Agencies)

Never Put off until Tomorrow What You Can Do Today

We have been told that never put off until tomorrow what you can do today since childhood. However, there are still many people who like putting off the things that should do today until tomorrow. They have no plans for their work and their time. As a result, they will not accomplish their goals in the end. For example, one Sunday I felt so tired after having a football match that I did not finish my homework even at night. I thought I could get up earlier to go to school the next morning so that I could finish my homework before class. But the next morning I was not able to get to school in time because of the traffic jam. I was punished by the teacher. It taught me a lesson. From then on I made a determination that I would never put off anything important until the next day. Please remember: Work today, for you don’t know how much you may be hindered tomorrow. Seize the present day, cherish every minute you have now and trust the tomorrow as little as possible.

How to Use Our Brain

Human brain is the most complex and intelligent mechanism in the world. It is the major factor that distinguishes man from animals. With our brain we get to know the world and make a good use of the world to our benefit.

Our brain is a product of constant use through millions of years. Other things can be used up, but used properly, our brain can never be exhausted. In fact, the more we use it, the more capable and efficient it will become. Excessive use of the brain, however, will causea lot of problems. So it is useful to know how to use our brain wisely.

First, handwork or physical labor is good exercise as well as rest for our brain. Doing handwork and brain work alternatively can help develop both our brain and hands. Secondly, we should avoid doing brainwork for long hours on end. The brain, though 3% of the body weight, when at work, consumes 20% of the oxygen carried by 16% of the blood in circulation. A long period of brainwork may cause, through lack of bodily activity, slow blood circulation and inadequate oxygen supply to the brain, resulting in inefficiency and possible damage to the brain.

Population to Be Curbed (A)

Nothing in today's world is as big a problem as that of population. People begin to worry about the support capacity of the earth. And there might be only standing room for each person in the future.

Lima's population was 5. 7 million in 1985 but it grew to 9. 1 million in 2000. Tianjin's was 7.9 million in 1985. In 2000, it boosted to 9. 7 million. Such cities as London, Osaka, Moscow, Beijing, Karachi, Delhi, Jakarta, Seoul, and Teheran are having a similar population growth. Calcutta, Shanghai, New York, and Sto Paulo see a faster population explosion. Tokyo had 18.8 million in 1985. In 2000 it turned into 20.2 million. Mexico city had 17.3 million people in 1985, but in 2000, its population reached 25.8 million!

What does the population growth mean? It means greater and greater consumption and greater pressure for the earth. If more people are added to the world population without our being alert or taking any action, we would have only standing room by the end of the 21st century.

Each government and the UN should see that population of each country and each city stops growing for the next fifty years.

Population to Be Curbed (B)

Everything grows in modern times, and it seems that nothing grows as quickly as population. Population keeps growing, and grows rapidly, firstly because people's living standards keep going up, with better houses, better clothing, better food, secondly because people know how to preserve themselves so as to live longer, and thirdly

because they have modern medicine and medical care to ensure that usual diseases can be easily cured. There is another cause for the growth of population. Few countries or governments have realised the importance of family planning. On the contrary, some encourage child-birth.

Here are some examples of population growth from 1985 to 2000 (as anticipated).

Lima had 5.7 million people in 1985 but there were 9.1 million by 2000. Tianjin used to have 7. 9 million in 1985. By 2000 its population reached 9. 7 million. Such cities as London, Osaka, Moscow, Beijing, Karachi, Delhi, Jakarta, Seoul, and Teheran are having a similar population growth. We would not be shocked if all other cities have this rate. But some cities, like Calcutta, Shanghai, New York, and Sto Paulo boost their population even more quickly than the above-mentioned cities. Tokyo had 18.8 million in 1985. The year 2000 found 20.2 million Tokyo citizens. Mexico city had 17.3 million people in 1985, but as population specialists had predicted, that reached 25.8 million in 2000 !

The population problem is a universal concern nowadays. Any government is a failure if it does nothing about its population growth.

My View on Job-hopping

People have different attitudes towards their work. Some prefer to stick to one occupation as their lifelong career. These people are of the opinion that one can never do his work well unless he is devoted to only one job in his lifetime. So if one changes his job frequently, he will not get the necessary experience needed in his work.

Others, on the other hand, like to change their jobs at times. In their opinion, people work in order to make more money. If they havea chance to get a better paid job, they will certainly try to get this chance. Besides, if a person does only one job all his life, he will certainly be bored with it.

My idea is that interest is the most important if one wants to excel others in his job. So if a person is not interested in his job, job hopping is normal and even necessary. Otherwise, he will suffer from his work, and inevitably, he is not likely to succeed in his career.
