After school club:

I take part in a society他们会怎麼认为?

AUBG Hosts Fourth International Model United Nations ConferenceOn Feb. 17-19, 2012, AUBG hosted the fourth annual Blagoevgrad International Model United Nations (BLIMUN) conference. More than 70 participants from different countries, such as Bulgaria, Russia, Germany, Serbia, Macedonia, and Albania, came to Blagoevgrad to assume the roles of UN diplomats and debate pressing international issues. This year, the student delegates simulated the work of the UN’s two main bodies, the Security Council and General Assembly. The Assembly tackled the thorny Israeli-Palestinian conflict, whereas the Security Council delegates deliberated on the issue of nuclear proliferation in Syria. Boban Markovic and Ivan Markovic, political science students from AUBG, chaired the Assembly meetings. Chair and moderator of the Council discussions was fourth-year student Simona Atanasova. Before the opening session, committee chairs held short training sessions in which they briefly explained the rules of procedure and introduced participants to diplomatic protocol and UN practice. Diplomats in trainingAfter welcoming all delegates, the president of the conference, Mile Tasevski, stated that "the mission of the conference is to create an engaging learning environment where students can practice international diplomacy, as well as hone their debating and speaking skills.” Delegates had a chance to watch short videos in which AUBG political science professors addressed the substance of the two issues that became central to discussions in the Assembly and Security Council.During four formal and two working sessions participants debated courses of action and possible resolutions to the two crises. Negotiations and lobbying continued even during coffee breaks in a less formal but still diplomatic manner. For two days, Balkanski Academic Center, where the event took place, began to look much like the UN headquarters on the banks of New York City’s East River. “Last-minute consultations, pressure for compromise, tense negotiations and pushing for amendments contributed to the dynamics of the conference,” said Leo Wigger, a visiting student from Germany. In the end, both committees successfully drafted resolutions addressing the crises. In the midst of negotiationsThe smiles on delegates’ faces throughout the event indicated that BLIMUN was not just about politics, but about fun as well. After a long day of hard work, participants had a chance to enjoy the beautiful AUBG campus and vibrant night life of Blagoevgrad. At the closing ceremony on February 19, the organizers welcomed Ms. Radmila Shekerinska, a former deputy prime minister of the Republic of Macedonia. In her speech, Ms. Shekerinska stressed on the importance of leadership. “Liberty means responsibility,” she said. “Try to change yourself as a leader,” Shekerinska said, expressing hope that this generation of students is capable of making change and leading responsibly. She urged students to stick to their principles, “for they will guide longer and stronger than any other structure of power.”Ms. Radmila ShekerinskaThe organizers recognized a number of delegates from each committee for demonstrating excellent diplomatic and debating skills. Ms. Shekerinska handed out certificates to Nikola Mladenovic, an AUBG student from Serbia, who distinguished himself in the UN Security Council, and Dursunjemal Halimova from Turkmenistan, who was recognized for outstanding achievements in the UN General Assembly. Nekruz Mamadalizoda, a first-year student from Tajikistan, was recognized as the conference’s best delegate. He will attend a model UN conference in Rome, Italy as a reward. “I don’t know how to express my gratitude to all delegates and organizers for this wonderful event. It was an amazing experience,” Mamadalizoda said after receiving his certificate. Committee chairs and organizers agreed that it was a pleasure to encourage students to critically examine, debate, and discuss some of the pressing issues facing world leaders. Tasevski, the head of organizing team, said that this year’s edition of the simulation went beyond his expectations in terms of quality, participation, and organization. “This means that next year we might expand the conference, form more committees and bring more international participants, ultimately elevating BLIMUN to a higher level of competence and quality,” he said.Story by Katarina Duknic Photos by Mayya Kelova
