In a remote mountain village, there lived a mother pig and her three lovely pigs. Mother worked very hard every day. The piglets grew up day by day, but they still did nothing. 约瑟夫·雅各布斯（1854-1916）出生在澳大利亚的悉尼，1872年移居英格兰，就读于剑桥大学国王学院，后对人类学产生兴趣，成为英格兰民俗学会重要成员。他用十年时间收集英国民间童话，分两卷于1890和1894年出版，弥补了英国文学的一项缺憾。
1900年，举家迁往美国纽约，雅各布斯先做《犹太大百科》的修订编辑，后成为犹太神学院的英文教授。1914年返回欧洲治疗心脏病，两年后卒于此病，享年六十二岁。
