英文版的“Silent Night“原本是在圣诞前夜做弥撒时唱的，后来陆续被翻译成140余种语言，传遍了世界。清政府倒台后，Silent Night随着外国传教士一起传入了中国。五四时期，曾做过北大心理学教授，同时也是民国时期的基督教新教传教士的刘廷芳，给Silent Night做了中文翻译。
本着信达雅的原则，刘廷芳并没有直接按字面意思翻译成“寂静的夜”，而是按照其所表达的“安宁、平静”的精神，把Silent Night翻译成了《平安夜》。
Silent词语用法
1、silent的基本意思是“寂静的，无声的”。引申可作“沉默的，只字不提的”解，可指习惯上非绝对必要的话不说，也可指在特殊场合因特殊原因而对讲话有节制。
2、silent还可作“不发音”解，作此解时无比较级和最高级形式。
3、silent在句中常用作定语或表语，偶尔也可作宾语补足语。silent作表语时，后常接介词on〔about〕引起的短语，表示“对…保持沉默，对…未提到”。
