Home What makes a home? Love, sympathy and confidence. It is a place where kindly affections1 exist among all the members of the family. The parents take good care of their children, and the children are interested in the activities of their parents. Thus all of them are bound together by affection, and they find their home to be the cheeriest place in the world. A home without love is no more a home than a body without a soul is a man. duanwenw Every civilized person is a social being. No one should live alone. A man may lead a successful and prosperous life, but prosperity alone can by no means insure happiness. Many great personages in the world history had deep affections for their homes. Your home maybe is poor and humble, but your duty lies there. You should try to make it cheerful and fortable. The greater the difficulties are, the richer will be your reward. A home is more than a house. It is a school in which people are trained for citizenship. duanwenw A man will not offer good service to his country if he can do nothing good for his home; for if he doesn’t love his home, he will not love his country. The home is the birthplace of true patrioti *** 5; it is the secret of social welfare and national prosperity. It is the basis and origin for civilization. A father's job is unique. If parents had job descriptions mine would read: organize bills, playmates, laundry, meals, laundry, carpool, laundry, snacks, outings and shopping, and laundry. The only thing on my hu *** and's description would be the word "fun" written in big red letters along the top. Although he is a selfless caregiver and provider, our children think of him more as a bination of a jungle gym***立体方格铁架*** and bozo***家伙,笨蛋*** and clown. Our parenting styles pliment each other. His style is a nonstop adventure where no one has to worry about washing their hands, eating vegetables, or getting cavities. My style is similar to Mussolini. I'm too busy worrying to be fun. Besides, every time I try, I am constantly outdone by my hu *** and. I bought my children bubble gum flavored toothpaste, and I taught them how to brush their teeth in tiny circles so they wouldn't get cavities. They thought it was neat until my hu *** and taught them, how to rinse***漂洗*** by spitting out water between their two front teeth like a fountain. I took the children on a walk in the woods and, after two hours, I managed to corral a slow ladybug***瓢虫*** into my son's insect cage. I was "cool" until their father came home, spent two minutes in the backyard, and captured a beetle the size of a Chihuahua. I try to tell myself I am a good parent even if my hu *** and does things I can't do. I can make sure my children are safe, warm, and dry. I'll stand in line for five hours so the children can see Santa at the mall or be first in line to see the latest Disney movie. But I can't wire the VCR so my children can watch their favorite video. I can carry my children in my arms when they are tired, tuck them into bed, and kiss them goodnight. But I can't flip them upside down so they can walk on the ceiling, or prop them on my shoulders so they can see the moths flying inside of the light fixture. I can take them to doctor appointments, scout meetings, or field trips to the aquarium, but I'll never go into the wilderness, skewer a worm on a hook, reel in a fish, and cook it over an open flame on a piece of tin foil. I'll even sit in the first row of every Little League game and cheer until my throat is sore and my tonsils are raw, but I'll never teach my son how to hit a home run9 or slide into first base. As a mother I can do a lot of things for my children, but no matter how hard I try I can never be their father. 中学生经典英语美文:生活的一课 "Everything happens for the best", my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment." Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked***搭便车*** to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station-and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person- "Go out in the sticks and find a *** all station that'll give you a chance,”she said. I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois. While them was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father sad Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scot *** an named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer. As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked a1oud,"How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?" I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: "if you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment" I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I'd gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.

1 Tom: I just dropped in to say goodbye. Nancy: What time are you leaving? Tom: I’ll leave at 10 o’clock. Nancy: Take care and give my best to your parents. Tom: Thank you, I will. Hope to see you again next year. 2 Tom: Hey Hong, I really need to call back to the UK but I can’t afford to pay for the roaming charges. Hong: Well, why don’t you use a local SIM card? Tom: Can I do that? Hong: Yes. Just go to the convenience store and ask for a SIM card. Then insert it into your phone. Tom: I see. How much will that cost? Hong: Well it’s 100 RMB for the SIM card then it will cost you about 10 RMB per minute to call the UK. Tom: Wow, that is cheap. Thank you very much. 3 SALESPERSON: May I help you, sir? SIMON: Yes, I want to buy a VCR. SALESPERSON: Well, we have many models to choose from here. Do you have a particular brand you want? SIMON: No. I only want it to be a very good one. The best. It's a graduation gift for my son. SALESPERSON: I see. And does your son have a VCR now? SIMON: Well, he uses our VCR at home. But he's going to university in the Fall, so he needs his own VCR. SALESPERSON: Does he watch a lot of movies? SIMON: Yes, he sure does. In fact, he wants to bee a movie producer himself. He wants to study film at the university. SALESPERSON: I would like to make a suggestion then, sir. SIMON: Please do. SALESPERSON: If your son wants to study film, probably he will start to collect movies himself. SIMON: Yes, I know that. So I want him to have a good VCR to use. SALESPERSON: May I suggest you consider buying him a DVD player instead? SIMON: DVD? Isn't that like a CD? SALESPERSON: It is very similar. The technology is the same. SIMON: Why is a DVD better than a VCR? SALESPERSON: For one thing, sir, the quality of the image is usually better. That's because it's digital. SIMON: But isn't it more expensive? SALESPERSON: It is a little more expensive, sir. But there is one important advantage which your son might appreciate. SIMON: What's that? SALESPERSON: If your son starts to buy video tapes, he can't keep them very long. SIMON: And why not? SALESPERSON: Video tape breaks down after fifteen years. So if he collects a lot of tapes, after fifteen years they will all start to rot. SIMON: Hmm. Is that true? SALESPERSON: Yes, it is, sir. SIMON: Well. And what about DVDs? SALESPERSON: This is the excellent thing about DVDs. If your son starts to collect DVDs, they will last forever. They will never rot. SIMON: Hmm. He might really appreciate that. I know he will start to collect movies at school. Especially if he studies film. SALESPERSON: So let me show you some of our DVD players. In my opinion, DVD is the wave of the future. SIMON: Alright, please show me what you have.

觅蝴蝶说 “let's look at a VCR,这段话还是容易理解的” 哈! 我肤浅的英文认为 Let's watch a video 才对, WATCH TV 而不是 LOOK at TV。。
