丙一机工扩大航区英语培训要三个月左右。水手、机工适任证书包含内容相对较多，像沿海（丙类）水手/机工业务理论、实操评估，另外，远洋(乙类）水手、机工还需要考试英语理论与听力会话。根据国家海事局要求，水手证和机工证培训时间大致在3个月左右，考试时间为2—3天。沿海水手、机工适任证书培训过关率在90%—98%之间，远洋过关率相对较低一些。英语科目注意沿海水手、机工培训无英语科目，而报考远洋水手、机工的学员还需考试英语科目。水手岗前培训内容主要包括理论知识，以及实操部分的水手工艺和水手值班。普通船员水手、机工属于支持级船员，在考试培训方面都比较简单，在完成规定的课时要求，过关率都是比较高的。如果参加远洋水手机工培训的学员，如果理论及实操均通过考试后，英语没有通过，可选择补考或转为国内沿海水手、机工。同理，国内水手、机工在获得适任证书后，满足6个月资历，可申请扩大航区考试，单独考试1门英语即可。
