USA National Science Fiction Day (596) - National Science Fiction Day is January 2, Isaac Asimov’s Birthday. Dr Isaac Asimov was a Russian-born Jewish American author and biochemist, a highly successful and exceptionally prolific writer best known for his works of science fiction and for his popular science books. Out of more than 270 books, Asimov's most famous work is the Foundation Series. USA Festival of Sleep Day (597) - January 3 is Festival of Sleep Day. Sleep is a natural part of everybody's life, but many people know very little about how important it is. Sleep, like diet and exercise, is important for our minds and bodies to function normally. An internal biological clock regulates the timing for sleep. It programs each person to feel sleepy during nighttime and to be active during daytime. USA 6th National Bird Day (598) - National Bird Day (January 5) is a day to appreciate our own native wild birds flying free outside our windows, and a day to reflect on how we treat the native birds of other countries. Epiphany (599) - Epiphany is a Christian feast intended to celebrate the shining forth or revelation of God to humankind in human form, in the person of Jesus. North Korea Hangul Day (610) - Hangul Day, also called Hangul Proclamation Day or Korean Alphabet Day, is a Korean national commemorative day marking the invention and the proclamation of Hangul, the native alphabet of the Korean language, by King Sejong the Great. It is observed on October 9 in South Korea and on January 15 in North Korea. India Makar Sankranti (608) - Makar Sankranti is a mid-winter festival of India. The day celebrates the northward journey of the Sun. The celebration is similar to winter solstice celebrations in other ancient cultures. Instead of the celebrating on the day of the Winter Solstice - Makar Sankranti is celebrated on January 13 -16, depending on the region. The festival is celebrated by the flying of kites in most of northern India. USA National Religious Freedom Day (612) - National Religious Freedom Day commemorates the Virginia General Assembly's adoption of Thomas Jefferson's landmark Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on January 16, 1786. Religious Freedom Day is officially proclaimed on January 16 each year by an annual statement by the President of the United States. Thailand 52nd Teachers' Day (659) - January 16 was adopted as Teachers' Day in Thailand by a resolution of the government on November 21, 1956. The first Teachers' Day was held in 1957. Winnie The Pooh Day (614) - Winnie The Pooh Day is in observance of the birthday of Alan Alexander Milne, 1882. Winnie-the-Pooh is a fictional bear created by Alan Alexander Milne. He appears in the books Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner. Milne also wrote two books of children's poetry, When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six, which include several poems about Winnie-the-Pooh. USA National Popcorn Day USA (615) - According to tradition, National Popcorn Day is celebrated on January 19 each year. There is some suggestion that Popcorn Day may, at one point, have been tied to the Superbowl. The origins of this holiday are unknown. USA Penguin Awareness Day Penguin Awareness Day (616) - Penguins are an order of aquatic, flightless birds living in the Southern Hemisphere. They are found in Antarctica, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Elsewhere, they are only found in zoos. January 20 is Penguin Awareness Day. The origins of this holiday are unknown. USA 22nd National Hugging Day (618) - National Hugging Day was founded on January 21, 1986. Saint Vincent's Day (620) - January 22 is Saint Vincent's Day. Saint Vincent of Saragossa was born at Huesca and martyred under Diocletian, in 304. He is the patron saint of Lisbon. He was originally from Zaragoza in modern Spain and is also known as Saint Vincent the Deacon. The title deacon means only minister or servant. The Saddest Day Of The Year (621) - Today is the most depressing day of the year. That’s according to research conducted at Cardiff University. Apparently, gloomy weather, holidays debts and failed New Year’s resolutions all combine to make us feel pretty negative about life. USA National Pie Day (622) - Created by the American Pie Council, National Pie Day is dedicated to the celebration of pie. As part of the American heritage, this day is a perfect opportunity to pass on the love and enjoyment of pie eating and pie making to future generations. 55th International Customs Day (11) - International Customs Day is celebrated under the auspices of the World Customs Organization. The Organization has 150 member states with its headquarters in Brussels and has for a purpose the facilitation of trade and travel of the world's citizens. Celebrated each year on January 26, this special day recognizes the efforts of the men and women working in customs organizations worldwide. This day marks the contribution of Customs to making our communities safe, secure and prosperous. Laba Jie (16) - Most Chinese treat Laba Jie as a reminder of the approaching Chinese New Year, hardly aware of its Buddhist background. This day is to celebrate Sakyamuni, founder of Buddhism, as he achieved revelation by practicing asceticism, surviving merely on a meal of congee a day. Eating a particular type of congee called labazhou is the most important event of this festival. USA 25th National Kazoo Day (626) - National Kazoo Day is celebrated on or about the last Thursday in January, or some other time at the convenience of the kazooist. Usually, it is around January 28. A kazoo is a tube-formed, American musical instrument, with both ends of the tube uncovered. 54th World Leprosy Day (18) - Every year since 1954 the last Sunday of January has been observed as World Leprosy Day (WLD). It was initiated by Raoul Follereau, founder of the French Leprosy Charity. In addition to the health hazards, leprosy is also a sociological issue, carrying with it a stigma that is still widespread and legitimised. USA National Carnation Day (627) - January 29 is National Carnation Day. It is a bizarre holiday.
