Ginkgo biloba, known as ginkgo, also spelled gingko, or as the maidenhair tree,is the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta, all others being extinct. It is found in fossils dating back 270 million years. Native to China,the tree is widely cultivated and was introduced early to human history. It has various uses intraditional medicine and as a source of food. The genus name Ginkgo is regarded as a misspelling of the Japanese gin kyo, "silver apricot".

一、生长环境
喜生于向阳、湿润肥沃的壤土及沙壤土中为我国特产，一般为人工栽培。栽培地区北至辽宁，南达广东，东起浙江，西达陕西、甘肃、西南到四川、贵州、云南等地。
二、药材形状
本品多皱折或破碎，完整者呈扇形，长3～12cm，宽5～15cm。黄绿色或浅棕黄色，上缘呈不规则的波状弯曲，有的中间凹入，深者可达叶长的4/5。具二叉状平行叶脉，细而密，光滑无毛，易纵向撕裂。叶基楔形，叶柄长2～8cm。体轻。
三、生理特性
1、为落叶大乔木，高30～40米，全株无毛，胸径可达4米，幼树树皮近平滑，浅灰色，大树之皮灰褐色，不规则纵裂，有长枝与生长缓慢的距状短枝。
2、叶互生，在长枝上辐射状散生，在短枝上3～5枚成簇生状，有细长的叶柄，扇形，两面淡绿色，在宽阔的顶缘多少具缺刻或2裂，宽5～8（～15）厘米，具多数叉状并歹帕细脉。雌雄异株，稀同株，球花单生于短枝的叶腋。
3、雄球花成葇荑花序状，雄蕊多数，各有2花药；雌球花有长梗，梗端常分两叉（稀3～5叉），叉端生1具有盘状珠托的胚珠，常1个胚珠发育成发育种子。种子成熟期9～10月。

When I was very small, I lived in my hometown with my grandparents. It was the best time of my life. There was a ginkgo tree in front of my house. My grandparents planted it many years ago. So the tree also grew up with me.
It was tall and sometimes I would climb up the tree and looked around the scenery. I enjoyed the time when I was on the tree. Now I move to another city with my parents, but I miss the ginkgo tree all the time. So when the holiday comes, I will go back to my hometown and to see if the ginkgo tree has grown taller.
