火锅是一群人的冒菜，而冒菜则是一个人的火锅。
冒菜是四川的特色美食，而火锅很多地方的吃法都不一样。老北京铜炉子羊肉涮锅是火锅，广东潮汕打边炉也是火锅，日本的寿喜锅也是火锅，这些地方的火锅和四川火锅是不一样的风格。冒菜和四川火锅基本上就是豪华版和低配缩小版的差别。
吃火锅就是一口锅子放在饭桌当中炖煮，各种食材往里面涮。吃火锅人越多越有气氛，荤素贵贱各种食材都往锅里面涮。
如果在自己家里吃火锅，一点不比炒菜烧菜省事儿，虽然看上去不用一个个炒菜，但是涮火锅的食材种类丰富，每一样食材都要花时间去准备，蔬菜要清洗和切片。肉也得花功夫准备。火锅蘸料也得花功夫准备着。在家吃火锅一顿饭下来要相当多的时间。而冒菜就没必要这么麻烦了。
冒菜只需要一点儿火锅底料下到锅里煮开，随便往锅里面下点菜烫熟整个装盆，然后装米饭开吃。冒菜吃起来方便快捷，而且一个人两个人吃的冒菜不用担心自己涮的肉被别人抢走。
吃冒菜不需要另外准备什么蘸料，更不用搞鸳鸯锅。
冒菜是一道以肉类、豆制品、青菜、海鲜、菌菇类作为主要食材制作而成的菜品，与麻辣烫有稍微的不同。“冒”字在这里是动词，准备一锅麻辣鲜香的汤汁，把菜用一个个竹勺装好，一般一勺就是一份。把菜在锅里烫熟，盛到碗里，再淋上一勺热气腾腾的汤汁，一晚香气扑鼻的冒菜就完成啦！
冒菜就是缩小版低配版最好是单人食用的四川小火锅，而火锅则是包罗万象。火锅和冒菜的关系怎么说呢？我来举个例子便于大家理解吧，大家后看过陈小春郑伊健他们的香港电影吧，火锅好比是某一个行当，这个行当里有很多社团，四川火锅算是火锅这一行业里面的大社团，然后这个社团里面又有很多堂口，冒菜、串串香、冷锅串串就是四川火锅这个社团里的各个堂口。
