艾米丽生性寂寞，自小内向的她，缄默又总带着几分以男性自居的感觉，诚如夏洛蒂所说的：“她的性格是独一无二的。”少女时代，当她和姐妹们在家里“编造”故事、写诗的时候，她就显得很特别，后来收录在她们诗歌合集中艾米丽的作品总是如同波德莱尔或爱伦·坡那样被“恶”这一主题所困惑，在纯净的抒情风格之间总笼罩着一层死亡的阴影。在她写作《呼啸山庄》时，这种困惑与不安的情绪变得更加急躁，她迫切需要创造一个虚构的世界来演绎它，把自己心底几近撕裂的痛苦借小说人物之口淋漓尽致地发泄出来。因此《呼啸山庄》是饱含作者心血与情感的作品。
