“ciil engineering”翻译为“土木工程”,要从两个方面来看成因。
①“civil engineering”及相关词汇的含义在不断发展变化。
②从西文翻译为东方文字(中文/日文)时的考量与变化。
有答主提到,“civil”在“civil engineering”中,作为与“military”相对立的概念,将含义限定在了“non-military”的范围内,即与市政/民生/民事等相关;而后在不断的发展中,最终变成专指与桥梁/道路/建筑等相关的概念。
实际上,在法国,法文中的“ingénieur”一词的意思最初的确是指“军事工程师”,属于军队序列。同样的,在1797年之前出版的《大英百科全书》,也定义“engineer”为“有才能的军事技术专家。
