1、place用作动词的基本意思是“将(某物)置于某处”“将(某物)放在应放之处”,引申可表示“安排”“使(某人)处于某处境或环境”,还可表示“记住”“凭记忆或经验辨认”“确定名次”“投资”“发订单,打赌”等。
2、place表示“确定名次”时,在英国指“(赛马等比赛的)前三名”。
place, locality这两个词的共同意思是“地点”。其区别在于:
1、locality常表示事件发生处; place既可指较笼统的范围,又可指具体的某一地点或位置。例如:
It was the locality of the crime。这就是犯罪现场。
John competed for a place at the school, but didn't get in。约翰想在学校里占有一席之地,但并未成功。
2、place的使用范围较广,但指“地区、地带”时, locality比place所指的范围大。
