The Cowherd and the Girl Weaver (牛郎织女)
On the east bank of the Heavenly River lived a girl weaver, daughter of the Emperor of Heaven. She worked hard year in and year out, weaving colourful clothes for gods and goddesses.Since she lived all alone, the emperor took pity on her and allowed her to marry the cowherd on the west bank of the river. However, she stopped weaving after she was married. Greatly outraged, the emperor forced the girl back across the river and allowed her to join her husband only once a year. On the seventh day of each autumn, magpies would suddenly become bald-headed for no obvious reasons at all. According to legend, that day the cowherd and the weaver met on the east bank of the river, and magpies were made to form a bridge for them. And for this reason the down on their heads was worn out.

The story of Chinese Valentine's Day .In a Chinese legend, the Sun God had seven beautiful daughters. All his fairy daughters could weave beautiful clothes. One day, the seven fairies came down from heaven and were playing in a river. A cowherd walked by the river. He saw that the fairies had left their beautiful clothes on the shore, so he took one of them. His plan was to stop one of the fairies from flying back to their heaven palace.
He reasoned that the fairies needed to wear their beautiful clothes if they wanted to fly. When it was time to go home, the youngest fairy could not find her clothes. The other fairies put on their clothes and flew away. The youngest fairy was very sad and she started to cry. The cowherd saw this and offered to take her to his house. Because the cowherd took care of the fairy so well, she fell in love with him and married him.
The Sun God also blessed their marriage. After they were married, the fairy thougjt she did not need to weave again. The Sun God got so angry that he took his youngest daughter away from her husband. He never wanted to see the cowherd again.
From then on, the fairy weaver stayed in heaven, and the cowherd stayed on earth. They could only see each other once a year on July 7th on the lunar calendar. The birds felt so sad for this young couple that they made a bridge for the two to walk on. This bridge is known as the "Milky Way"
Only once a year, the couple could meet on the Milky Way. And they still love each other deeply. Now it is a tradition to celebrate Chinese Valentine's Day once a year on July 7th of the lunar calender.

The festival has its origin from a romantic tragedy. As the story goes, once there was a cowherd, Niulang, who lived with his elder brother and sister-in-law. But she disliked and abused him, and the boy was forced to leave home with only an old cow for company. The cow, however, was a former god who had violated imperial rules and was sent to earth in bovine form. One day the cow led Niulang to a lake where fairies took a bath on earth. Among them was Zhinu, the most beautiful fairy and a skilled seamstress. The two fell in love at first sight and were soon married. They had a son and daughter and their happy life was held up as an example for hundreds of years in China. Yet in the eyes of the Jade Emperor, the Supreme Deity in Taoism, marriage between a mortal and fairy was strictly forbidden. He sent the empress to fetch Zhinu.
