关于楼层的叫法，英、美两大体系给我们制造了诸多麻烦。最大的麻烦在于确定“一楼”到底在哪一层。英联邦国家的一楼(level 1 或 first floor)是美国的二楼(second floor)，因为英国人将美国的一楼称作底楼(ground floor)了。
在这一点，我们国家和美国站在一边，把 ground floor 算作 first floor。不过，美国和加拿大有时也会像英国一样，同时有 first floor (通常为一座楼的 main floor)和其楼下的 ground floor。
这种情况不常有，一般发生在两个楼层均有街面入口，有时候 ground floor 上面的一层也算不上 first floor。在 ground floor 上面的那层，有时被称作 upper ground，电梯上会显示 UG。至于 ground floor 下面，情况就更复杂了。
英语国家，通常将 ground floor 下面的楼层称作 basement，电梯上显示 B，如果有两层以上的 basement，电梯则会分别显示 B1, B2 等。
但在英联邦国家的商场、办公楼中，大多用 LG(Lower Ground)表示 basement，因为那里的人们认为 basement 这一词和他们的商业形象不相配。
这样，电梯上的 B 会变成 LG;B1 和 B2 会变成 LG1 和 LG2。在所有的英语国家，楼层的计数并不乱—多少层就是多少层，照实计数。
比如说，尽管英国的一栋楼的最高层为 6th floor，美国的一栋楼的最高层为 7th floor，但如果没有地下室和中间层，这两栋楼都被称作a seven-storey building。
