一个小女孩，她父母在印度死于瘟疫，她被舅舅带回英国，住在舅舅家里。舅舅家里有个小男孩，但是那个小男孩的身体并不好，而且舅舅并不喜欢他的儿子。舅舅经常出门，家里只剩下佣人和两个小孩。于是小女孩与小男孩成了好朋友，他们与一个女佣的弟弟也成了好朋友，总是在一起玩。
