猫咪钓鱼
A cat goes to a river every day. He wants to go fishing. But he can’t catch any fish.
一只猫每天去河边，他想去钓鱼，但是他去钓不到一条。
One day, he goes to the river as usual. Suddenly a fish comes out. He catches the fish. He is very happy. He forgets to put the fish in the basket. He dances and sings. He shouts, “I have a fish! I have a fish!” All his friends come to see him.
一天，他像往常一样去了河边。突然一条鱼浮出了水面。他捉到了那条鱼。他非常开心。他忘记把鱼放到篮子里去了。他又唱又跳，叫道：“我捉到一条鱼!我捉到一条鱼!”他所有的朋友都过来看。
“Where is your fish? Let us have a look at it. ” his friends say.
“你的鱼在哪儿?让我们看一看。”他的朋友们说。
“It’s there, near the bank.” the cat answers. But he can’t find the fish. When he sings and dances, the fish jumps back into the river.
“在那儿，河岸附近。”猫回答道。但是他找不到那条鱼。当他又唱又跳的时候，鱼跳回了河里。

小马过河
One day, a colt took a bag of wheat to the mill. As he was running with the bag on his back, he came to a small river. The colt could not decide whether he could cross it. Looking around, he saw a cow grazing nearby. He asked, “Aunt Cow, could you tell me if I can cross the river?” The cow told him that he could and that the river was not very deep, just knee high.
一天，一匹小马驮着麦子去磨坊。当它驮着口袋向前跑去时?突然发现一条小河挡住了去路。小马为难了，这可怎么办呢，它向四周望了望， 看见一头奶牛在河边吃草。小马问道：“牛阿姨，请您告诉我，这条河我能趟过去吗。”奶牛回答说：“水很浅，刚到膝盖。”
The colt was crossing the river when a squirrel jumped down fron a tree and stopped him. The squirrel shouted, “Colt, stop! You’ll drown! One of my friends drowned just yesterday in the river.” Not knowing what to do, the colt went home to consult his mum.
小马正准备过河，突然从树上跳下一只松鼠，拦住它大叫道：“小马，别过河，你会被淹死的。昨天，我的一个伙伴就在这条河里淹死啦。”小马不知如何是好，于是决定回家问问妈妈。
He told his mum his experience on the way. His mother said, “My child, don’t always listen to others. You’d better go and try yourself. Then you’ll know what to do.”
Later, at the river,the squirrel stopped the colt again. “Little horse, it’s too dangerous!” “No, I want to try myself,” answered the colt. Then he crossed the river carefully.
小马把路上的经历告诉了妈妈。妈妈说：“孩子，光听别人说是不行的，你自己亲自去试一试，就知道答案了。”小马回到河边，刚要下水，松鼠又大叫起来：“小马，你不要命啦。”小马说：“让我自己试试吧。”他一面回答一面下了河，小心地趟了过去。

When the coast was clear the timid one ran back, and, flourishing his weapon, cried in a threatening voice, “Where is he? Let me get at him, and I’ll soon let him know whom he’s got to deal with.” But the other replied, “You are a little late, xiaogushi8.com my friend: I only wish you had backed me up just now, even if you had done no more than speak, for I should have been encouraged, believing your words to be true. As it is, calm yourself, and put up your sword: there is no further use for it. You may delude others into thinking you’re as brave as a lion: but I know that, at the first sign of danger, you run away like a hare.”
两个士兵一起赶路，途中被一个强盗所劫。其中一个士兵马上逃跑了，另一个则勇敢地握着剑立在原地，强盗不得不其他而逃。这时候，那个胆小的士兵跑过来，抽出剑，壮着胆子大喝一声：“他去哪里了?让我来对付他，我要让他知道面对的是什么人。”然而，那名勇敢的士兵说：“你来晚了，我的朋友。要是你刚才能帮我就好了，即便只是嘴上这样说也好，因为我会受到你这番话的鼓舞，并且相信这些话都说真的。而现在，还是请你把剑收好，已经没有必要再用它了。你只能欺骗其他人，让人们以为你像雄狮一样勇敢;而我却知道，在遇到危险时，你会像兔子一样落荒而逃。”

卖牛
An old man is selling a big cow. A young mancomes to the cow and begins to look at it carefully. Then the old man goes upto him and says in his ears. “Don’t say anything about the cow before I sellit, then I will give you some meat.”
一位老人正在卖一头大奶牛。一个年轻人来到奶牛旁边开始仔细地看它。老人走过去对他耳语道：“在我卖掉这头奶牛前不要说任何话，过后我会给你一些肉。”
“All right,” says the young man. After theold man sells the cow, he gives the young man some meat and says, “Now, you cantell me how do you think of the bad leg of the cow.”
“好吧。”年轻男子说道。老人卖掉了奶牛，他给了年轻人一些肉并说道：“现在你能告诉我关于这头奶牛有条坏腿你是怎么看的?”
“I didn’t find the bad leg,” says the youngman. “Then why did you look at the cow carefully?” asks the old man.
“我没发现坏腿呀。”年轻男子说。“那你为什么仔细地看着这头牛?”老人问道。
Then young man answers, “Because I have neverseen a cow, and I wanted to know what it looks like.”
年轻人回答道：“因为我从未见过奶牛，我只想知道它长得什么样。”

In the field, there was a small animal called "wu shu"(the flying squirrel1).
It would say to everyone it met: "I have five skills: flying, walking, swimming, climbing trees, and digging holes in the ground."
Thereupon, its pals2 would laugh at it, saying: "Though you have learned these skills, you have mastered none of them. You can fly, but not high; you can swim, but not far; you can climb trees, but not to the treetop; you can dig holes in the ground, but not deep enough."
When the flying squirrel heard what its pals said, it ran away in anger.
Indeed, the flying squirrel had learned five skills, but when put to use, they were useless. How could they be called real skills.
田野里有一种小动物，名叫“鼯鼠”。
它逢友便说：“我有五种本领：会飞，会走，会 游泳 ，会爬树，还会掘土大洞。”

There was a farmer in the Song Kingdom in ancient China. He worked in his field day after day. In good harvest years, he could only have enough food to eat and enough clothing to wear. If the field failed to produce enough crops, he had to go hungry. This farmer wanted to improve his life. But he was too lazy and too cowardly. He always dreamed of having unexpected fortune.
A miracle took place at last. One day, when he worked in the field, some people were hunting nearby. They shouted loudly one after another. Some little animals were running desperately. Suddenly, a hare dashed itself headlong against the stump of a dead tree in his field and died.
That day, he had a good meal.
From that day on, he no longer worked in his field. From morning till night, he stayed by that miraculous stump, waiting for another hare. Will the miracle happen again?
People often use the set phrase “staying by a stump waiting for more hares to come and dash themselves against it" to refer to persons dreaming to reap without sowing.

人们后来就常用“守株待兔”这个 成语 来形容那些老梦想着不耕种就会有收获的人。

A mouse once took a bite out of a bull's tail as he lay dozing. The bull jumped up in a rage and, with his head low to the ground, chased the mouse right across the yard. The mouse was too quick for him, however, and slipped easily into a hole in the wall.
The bull charged the wall furiously again and again, but although he bruised his head and chipped his horns, the mouse stayed safely inside his hole. After a time the bull gave up and sank down to rest again.
As soon as the bull was asleep, the little mouse crept to the mouth of the hole, pattered across the yard, bit the bull again -- this time on the nose -- and rushed back to safety. As the bull roared helplessly the mouse squeaked:
"It's not always the big people who come off best. Sometimes the small ones win, you know."
有一次，公牛躺着打盹，一只老鼠咬了他的尾巴。公牛怒气冲冲地跳起来，低着头追老鼠，一直追过院子。然而，老鼠跑得比他快多了，从容地钻到墙洞里去了。

A man once had four sons who never stopped quarrelling with one another. He was always telling them how much easier life would be if they worked together but they took absolutely no notice of him. One day he decided to show them what he meant.
He called all the sons together and put a tightly tied bundle of sticks on the floor in front of them.
"Can you break that ? " he asked the youngest son. The boy put his knee on the bundle but though he pressed and pulled with his arms he could not bend the wood. The father asked each son in turn to try to break the bundle, but none of them could do it .
Then he untied the string and scattered the sticks.
" Now try, " he said . The boys broke the sticks easily in their hands.
"Do you see what I mean ?" asked the father. "if only you stand together no one can hurt you . If you all disagree the whole time and insist on going your separate ways, the first enemy you meet will be able to destroy you. "
United we stand ; divided we fall.
从前有一个人，他有四个儿子。儿子们不断地争吵。他一再告诫他们说，如果他们一起干活儿，生活会舒适得多，但他们丝毫不理会他的意见。有一天，他决定通过示范把自己的意思告诉他们。
他把四个儿子都叫来，又把一捆扎得很紧的细树枝放在他们面前的地上。
"你能折断这个吗?"他问最小的儿子。小伙子用膝盖顶住，两只手又压又拉，都不能把那捆树枝弄弯。父亲让别的儿子挨个儿试试，看他们是否能把那捆树枝折断，但谁也做不到。
然后，他解开绳子，把树枝撒开。
"试试吧。"他说。四个小伙子用手轻轻一撅，树枝就断了。
"你们明白我的意思了吗?"父亲问，"只要你们联合起来，谁也不能伤害你们。如果你们老吵架，一定要各行其是，那么你们一遇到敌人，就会被打败。"
合则存，分则败。
