作品主题
《飞鸟集》中表现了深层的精神追求—爱与和谐的宇宙终极原则或神，描绘自然万物的灵（神）性相通，有机一体，展现人与自然、爱与神的亲密无间、交互融溶，歌赞生命的自由、平等、博爱—从而生成了丰富隽永的人生哲理。在这里神、自然、人与爱的界限已经模糊不清了，诗人追求人与神的合一、爱与神的关系、以及神与自然的统一，渴望与神“完全合一的形象显现”，也就是要达到有限生命与无限生命的统一，就是要达到人的最高的理想境界。
为此，诗中揭示，人必须完善自己的人格，要在“思想中摒除虚伪”，要驱走心中“一切的丑恶”，并且只能在“爱”中，在“爱的服务”中与神结合。诗人在诗篇中表达了人生的奉献与人生意义的追求，使诗篇充满着生机。
由于诗人的生命哲学并不完善，在有限的生命与无限的生命最终统一问题上，显得无能为力，只好用道德的自我完善和“泛爱论”来求得统一，求得人生的圆满，求得社会理想的实现。

《飞鸟集》英文是Stray bird。
《飞鸟集》中很多诗歌原先是用孟加拉文创作的，后由泰戈尔自己翻译成英文，还有一些则直接用英文写就。这本诗集包括325首无题诗，其中绝大多数的诗只有一两行，或者捕捉一个自然景观，或者述说一个事理。
诗集并没有明显的逻辑结构和明确的中心，只是诗人在日常生活中的感触、思考、情思的片段的记录。
飞鸟集赏析：
《飞鸟集》的诗大部分只有一两行，极少数是三四行。诗人把这些小题为《飞鸟集》，笔者认为，也许他意在用这些描叙南来北往的漂泊者的长途跋涉的诗句，把自己比作寻求理想境界的“永恒的旅客”，记录自己的行程。
因此，泰戈尔在诗句中，往往善于捕捉一个自然景物，或叙说一个素理，犹如空中的闪电，海波的泛光，夕阳的余辉，黎明的暗影，给人一种鲜明的印象，蕴藏一种深奥的哲理。虽然诗中表现的是一刹那的印象，或瞬息万变的心里想空中飞鸟没有足印的行程。
诗人似见非见，若有若无，虚无缥缈，难以捉摸，但只要紧紧扣住诗人的基本哲学思想和社会观，这部诗集中的哲理内容还是可以理解的。《飞鸟集》景情意理四妙兼得，尤以“笔者得于心、 阅者会以意”的哲理高妙为最。这正是他发人深省之奥妙所在。
