孔子学院，即孔子学堂（Confucius Institute），它并非一般意义上的大学，而是推广汉语和传播中国文化与国学的教育和文化交流机构，是一个非营利性的社会公益机构，一般都是下设在国外的大学和研究院之类的教育机构里。孔子学院最重要的一项工作就是给世界各地的汉语学习者提供规范、权威的现代汉语教材；提供最正规、最主要的汉语教学渠道。孔子学院总部（Confucius Institute Headquarters）设在北京，2007年4月9日挂牌。境外的孔子学院都是其分支机构，主要采用中外合作的形式开办。

孔子学院的英文名称：Confucius Institute。孔子学院( 英文：Confucius Institute )，是中国国家对外汉语教学领导小组办公室在世界各地设立的推广汉语和传播中国文化与国学教育的文化交流机构。孔子学院最重要的一项工作就是给世界各地的汉语学习者提供规范、权威的现代汉语教材；提供最正规、最主要的汉语教学渠道。全球首家孔子学院2004年6月15日在乌兹别克斯坦塔什干正式设立，截至2014年12月7日，全球126个国家（地区）建立475所孔子学院和851个孔子课堂。孔子学院设在120国(地区)共475所，其中，亚洲32国(地区)103所，非洲29国42所，欧洲39国159所，美洲17国154所，大洋洲3国17所。孔子课堂设在65国共851个(科摩罗、缅甸、马里、突尼斯、塞舌尔、瓦努阿图只有课堂，没有学院)，其中，亚洲17国79个，非洲13国18个，欧洲25国211个，美洲7国478个，大洋洲3国65个。
