According to the figures given in the table, grain, which used to be the main food for most of the Chinese people, has now become less important. By contrast, the consumption of milk and meat has considerably increased, accounting for 13% and 26% of the total respectively in 2001. In the same way, the demand for fruit and vegetables has been on the rise. What caused these changes? I think there are at least two reasons. In the first place, with the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy, great changes have taken place in all the branches of our national economy. The rapid growth in industrial and agricultural production has inevitably brought about a sharp rise in living standard. People now can afford a diet higher in protein and lower in carbon-hydrates. That is why the consumption of milk and meat has remarkably increased in the city and in the country. Secondly, more attention is now paid to the balanced diet, which is necessary for good health. As a consequence, vegetables and fruit that are rich in vitamins have been in ever-rising demand. In conclusion, with the change in people’s diet the consumption of fruit, vegetables, milk and meat will gradually increase, while that of grain will continue to decline.
