Turpan 吐鲁番Turpan is located in a depression with the area of more than 1000 square kilometers of the eastern part of Xinjiang and some 80 meters below the sea level. And nearby the Moon Lake, or Eding Lake in local language, the lowest water surface is 154 meters below the sea level, the second lowest continental point in the world after the Dead Sea. Turpan is called the Land of Fire, which was derived from the intense summer temperature, the highest ever recorded was 47.5oC and in summer the ground surface temperature is about 70oC. “吐鲁番”是维吾尔语“低地”的意思。

在北纬41°12′--43°40′，东经87°16′--91°55′之间。东西横置的形如橄榄状的山间盆地，四面环山。盆地西起阿拉山沟口，东至七角井峡谷西口，东西长245公里；北部为博格达山山麓；南抵库鲁塔格山，南北宽约75公里。中部有火焰山和博尔托乌拉山余脉横穿境内，把本地区分成南、北两半。盆底艾丁湖水面，低于海平面155米，是最低的盆地，在世界上也仅次于低于海平面391米的约旦死海，为世界第二低地。属独特的暖温带大陆性干旱荒漠气候。因地处盆地之中，四周高山环抱，增热迅速、散热慢，形成了日照长、气温高、昼夜温差大、降水少、风力强五大特点，素有“火州”、“风库”之称。全年平均气温为14℃，夏季平均气温在30℃左右，全年气温高于35℃的炎热天气，平均为99天；高于40℃的酷热天气，平均为28天。四季气候变化的特点是：春季短暂，平均为61天，开春早，升温快；夏季漫长，平均152天，高温酷热；秋季更短，平均57天，降温急促；冬季较短，平均95天，风小雪稀，天气晴好，寒冷期短。一年中，以一月份最冷，7月份最热。

吐鲁番，又叫作西州，属于新疆维吾尔自治区，在新疆维吾尔自治区中部，东临哈密，西、南与巴音郭楞蒙古自治州的和静县、和硕县、尉犁县、若羌县毗连，北隔天山与乌鲁木齐市及昌吉回族自治州的奇台县、吉木萨尔县、木垒县相接。截止2020年末吐鲁番市总面积7万平方公里，下辖1个区、2个县、33个乡、168个行政村，常住人口为693988人。是全国著名的干热区，也是新丝绸之路和亚欧大陆桥的重要交通枢纽。
