Zhoushan, the only city of islands in China, is located in the middle part of China coastline ( 121°31′--- 123°25′E and 29°32′ --- 32°04′N ). It is a central hub of sea transport of Shanghai and the Yangtze Delta Ecomomic Zone to the outside world. Zhoushan has as many as 1390 islands with an area of 22,200 square kilometres, 1440 of which of a land area, with a population of 0.98 million. The main island, which is the fourth largest island in China, where the municipal government stands, covers an area of 502 square kilometres. It is the centre of economics, politics and culture of Zhoushan. It has a long history, which can be traced back to Neolithic Age, one the island lived and laboured man. Dinghai, where many historical relics has been discovered, such as ancient culture relics of the New Stone Age, the ruins of ancient battle field of the Opium War, has been named as a famous historical and cultural city by the provincial government. Zhoushan has under its jurisdiction two districts --- Dinghai and Putuo, two counties ---Daishan and Shengsi. In April, 1998, it was approved by the State Council to be one of the coastal economic zones and listed among those first plan and develop in Yangtze River Delta along the sea coast in 1992. Zhoushan, the Fish Storehouse of China, has it's annual aquatic productes over one million tons. It boasts of its fine deepwater coastline and ports for anchoring. Now 9 berths for ships of 10,000 tonnage have been put into use. Its annual loading and unloading is over 1,500 million tons. Zhoushan with fine scenery and simple lifestyle owns two state-level famous scenic spots --- Mount Putuo and Shengsi Islands; two provincial level well-known scenic spots --- Daishan and Peach-flower Islands. They receive more than 3 million tourists every year. Meteorology Zhoushan has a northern subtropical monsoon marine climate with clear four seasons; Leading wind directions are Southeast wind in Summer, Northwest wind in winter. With an annual average wind speed of 3.3m/s; And an average temperature of 15.6℃--16.6℃, and the frost free period reaches 251 --303 days perannum, annual average sunshine time 1941--2257 hours, and the annual preeipitation is 927--1620 mm. Fishery Zhoushan is the most famous fishery area in China. It is famous for big and small yellow croacker, ribbonfish, cuttlefish and other species of economic fish and shrimp. Zhoushan islands has an excellent natural enviroment conditon which is suitable for all the marine creature. To statistic, there are more than 360 fish species, 60 shrimp species and 100 shell species living in the sea area. The main 40 species for catching are ribbonfish, pomfret, mackerel, chinese herring, marine eel, spanish mackerel, rockfish, swimming crab, etc. As the major important ocean fishery processing basis of China, there are more than 100,000 people involved in fishery and related industry, which number is 10% of the whole city population. There are at least 10,000 automobile boats for the fishery industry, among them, there are more than 2,000 steel vessel. Now the catching area is extented as far as the east Africa, Indonesia, both of the south and the North Pacific Ocean.
