古代祀月的仪式，不断演化，形式范围不断扩大，汉魏时期已出现了“中秋赏月”习俗。汉武帝时有赏月之风。据记载∶“谕尚书镇牛渚，中秋夕与左右微服泛江。”而到唐玄宗时代更是盛行，唐云∶“中秋夕，上与贵妃临太液池望月。”后来又建专供赏月的“赏月台”。至宋代赏月之风更盛，南宋宫中建有“赏月桥”。

民间逐渐形成“拜月、祭月”习俗。俗谓∶“男不拜月，女不拜灶。”中秋拜月之俗，系由妇人主祭。因月为太阴，女属阴，男属阳，故女拜男不拜。 农历八月十五日是土地公生日，农家秋收后要答谢“土地公保佑平安”。这是古代祀月仪式演化而来的。
