go是音译，只不过是从日语演变的。这要从围棋传入欧洲说起。将围棋传到欧洲的人叫做奥斯卡·克谢尔特，1845年他从家乡德国赴日本工作，在日本迷上了围棋。
当时在日本，围棋已经被称为“国技”，广为流行。克谢尔特四处拜师学会了围棋，还写了许多关于围棋的文章和攻略带回欧洲。围棋在日语里写成“碁”（读做ご），发音与GO相似，于是克谢尔特便将围棋译作“GO”，从此成功教会（带偏）了一众欧洲人，将“GO”作为围棋的名字。
