卷舌音的英文读作retroflex。在发zh时，舌尖翘起，抵住硬腭前部，软腭上升，气流因通路完全封闭而积蓄起来。然后舌尖微离硬腭，形成一个窄缝，气流从窄缝中泄出，摩擦成声。声带不振动。发ch的阻碍部位和发音方式与发zh同，只是在发ch时，冲出的气流比发zh时要强许多。zh是舌尖后不送气清塞擦音，ch是舌尖后送气清塞擦音。在发sh时，舌尖翘起，接近硬腭前部，在舌尖与硬腭之间留有一个窄缝，软腭上升，气流从舌尖与硬腭间的窄缝里挤出，摩擦成声。声带不振动。发r的阻碍部位和发音方式与发sh同，只是在发r时，声带要振动。sh是舌尖后清擦音，r是舌尖后浊擦音。由于发舌尖后音时，舌尖要上翘起，是向后卷的，因此舌尖后音zh、ch、sh、r通常又叫做卷舌音。
