母亲节来了（Mother's Day is coming），大家有给妈妈送上祝福吗？

有的人会给妈妈买康乃馨（buy mom a bunch of carnations），有的人会直接送上一个吻（give mom a kiss），或者有的人，直接给红包（red packet）。

在英语世界里面，妈妈的英文叫法有很多。

比如说：

mother，mom，mum，mam，mommy，mummy，mama等等

mom VS mum

首先直入主题：

mom是美式英语，美国人更爱用。

mum是英式英语，英国人用得更多。

吐槽一下：其实按照发音规则，明显mum才是准确的拼写，但是美国人就是要另辟蹊径！

在美式英语American English中，my mom的出现频率更高。

而英式英语British English里面，my mum的出现频率更高。

神奇的mum

mum和mummy除了可以表示母亲，还有其他意思。

mum这个词可以作为形容词，常和“沉默的”silent相关。

所以你经常会看到以下的两个英语词组搭配：

keep mum 保持沉默

stay mum 保持沉默、闭口不谈

Alex always keeps mum about his feelings.

Alex总是对自己的感受闭口不谈。

还有一个表达是：Mum is the word。

Mum is the word其实就表示keep the secret保守秘密，不要说出去哦。

mum既然可以表示沉默的，mummy其实也和沉默相关。

mummy可以表示木乃伊，你想一下被包裹住了不能说话了，沉默了，这样记忆就快速一点啦。
