“三书六礼”指的是旧时汉族习俗的一种婚姻礼仪。“三书”指的是聘书、礼书和迎亲书，是在六礼的过程中需要用到的文书。“六礼”指的是纳采、问名、纳吉、纳征、请期和亲迎，是由求婚到完婚的整个结婚过程。
所谓“聘书”，指的是“定亲书”在男女双方正式缔结婚约的时候，也就是纳吉的时候所用到的文书。
“礼书”是过礼的文书，也就是礼物的清单，书中详细写明所送礼物的种类以及数量，在纳征的时候会用到。
“迎亲书”是指迎接新娘用到的文书，在结新娘过门的时候用的。
“三书六礼，明媒正娶”的具体内容：
这古代的结婚过程，与现代的意义有点不同。现代的结婚过程一般指结婚当日所举行的礼仪，三书六礼的结婚过程则包括了从谈婚、订婚到结婚等过程的文书和礼仪。与现代相似，整个传统婚姻习俗礼仪通知了亲属邻里，以取得社会的认可和保障。
除此之外，传统婚姻习俗礼仪使结婚的夫妇取得祖先神灵的认可和承担履行对父母及亲属的权利义务。
故此在古代某些时代，男女若非完成三书六礼的过程，婚姻便不被承认为明门正娶；嫁娶仪节的完备与否，直接影响婚姻的吉利。不过，在不同的中国朝代时期中，婚俗礼仪亦有所不同。
