火把节，对于每一个彝人来说，是一个集祈丰、祭祖以及娱乐为一体的传统节日。其中，农业祈丰是其最为重要的核心内涵。
它主观上采用敬天祭祖、转田、照岁、送火把等仪式，在客观上起到促进农业生产的作用。首先，火把节通过以一年为周期生产时序象征，来强化人们的农业生产和生活时间观念。
火把节期间，每村每寨都要竖立高二、三丈的大火把，按平年扎十二台，润年扎十三台，象征一年的周期，这是一年时间的聚合符号，而且用火燃烧的象征手法表现出来，火将十二台燃尽表示一年十二月的结束，和太阳行使一个周期的时间秩序一致。
