honorable judges and dear friends, my name is maer dongyan, i’m very happy today to stand here to share my speech, my imagination, and my story as an air traffic controller with all of you.
i, as a 35-year-old air traffic controller, have been working on the tower for nearly ten years. through these years’ working, i really come to love this job. besides, as the husband of my beloved, the father of my 8-year-old daughter, and the son of my old parents, i also love my family, a happy family.
however, it has been really hard to coordinate my work and my family.
it’s generally considered great to be an air traffic controller by the public, for the job is believed to be well-paid and quite easy. i was also one of them before i started the work. but things have been entirely different from what i used to think. as an air traffic controller of the new century, we’re facing tasks and barriers greater and harder than ever, that is, we have to ensure the safety and order of the fast-developing civil aviation. we’re burdened with pressure, responsibilities, the trust of hundreds of pilots, the lives of tens of thousands of passengers, and the hopes of millions of families. every step we take, every word we say is connected to the safety of passengers. and disasters may occur if we’re even a little bit careless. then, how can that be easy?
as a man who owns a family, i also have to take care of my family. still, it isn’t that easy. since i took the job 10 years ago, i haven’t had enough time to be with my family. so many festivals have i spend with microphones, but not my family and friends, just because my job needs me. so many times have my wife complained about my returning home late and having meals outside often, just because my job needs me. and so many times, my mom or dad is sick in bed, but i cannot be there with them in time, just because my job needs me. i cannot fully devote myself to my family because my job needs me, a lot of people need me. and again, as a man with a family, how can that be easy?
even though i’m not competent as a father, a husband, and a son, i still love my family. my daughter once said that it was her happiest time to see me back from work. and it’s the same with me. i’m pleased and grateful to see that my family can support and understand my work and my little devotion to them.
i have made many sacrifices as an air traffic controller. i really feel sorry for my family. but as i help pilots find their destinations under terrible weather conditions, and then hear “thanks” from them, i’m satisfied. and as i see planes taking off and landing safely, and make sure that hundreds more families can get together, i’m comforted. i even seem to be able to see the happy smiles on their faces.
such is my job, though i cannot enjoy much of the happiness my family brings to me, i can experience the sense of responsibility through my work. i’ll never regret this, regret choosing my job. it is through these years that i know what responsibility and devotion really mean. and it is through these years that i realize what family really means to me---supporting and understanding. i really appreciate them.
with my family as an anchor for me, i firmly believe that i can overcome all the difficulties on my way, and make a contribution to the cause of air traffic control. and i believe, i am, and always will be a member of civil aviation, and my family as well.
that’s all for my speech today, thank you very much for your listening.
Good afternoon, my dear teachers and friends,
Suppose you are in a dark cave alone now. Maybe you can not find any hope, you are trembling and frightened. What will you do? What will you say? Will you give up? (……) No we should not give up. We should try our best to find hope. So today, I am honored to stand here to share my opinion with you---- Let’s say NO to Give UP.
One windy spring day,I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites。 Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds darting and dancing。 As the strong winds gusted against the kites,a string kept them in check。
Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights。 They shook and pulled, but the restraining string and the cumbersome tail kept them in tow, facing upward and against the wind。 As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say,“Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!” They soared beautifully even as they fought the restriction of the string。 Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose。 “Free at last,” it seemed to say。 “Free to fly with the wind。”
Yet freedom from restraint simply put it at the mercy of an unsympathetic breeze。 It fluttered ungracefully to the ground and landed in a tangled mass of weeds and string against a dead bush。 “Free at last” free to lie powerless in the dirt,to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to lodge lifeless against the first obstruction。
How much like kites we sometimes are。 The Heaven gives us adversity and restrictions, rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength。 Restraint is a necessary counterpart to the winds of opposition。 Some of us tug at the rules so hard that we never soar to reach the heights we might have obtained。 We keep part of the mandment and never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground。
Let us each rise to the great heights, recognizing that some of the restraints that we may chafe under are actually the steadying force that helps us ascend and achieve。
If you could choose what kind of world to live in, what kind of world would you choose? If you could decide what would happen tomorrow, with what kinds of things would you fill it?
If you had the power to decide what types of opportunities would come your way, what opportunities would you select? If you knew that your experiences would match your expectations, what would your expectations be?

The sun has begun to set and I hang up the smile I’ve worn all day, though I will make sure it is the first thing I put back on in the morning just in case it is “that day。” I want her to see me at my very best。
I do the normal routine, eat dinner, clean the house, write—the usual stuff。 And then I lay down hoping to fall asleep quickly so my new day will hurry up and arrive。 A new day with a brand new sun。 But as I lay there and wait for the world to turn half way around,I think about her。 And sometimes I smile, and sometimes that smile will turn into asnicker, and then often that snicker will turn into a burst of laughter。
And then there are times I get that lump in my throat and that tight feeling in my chest, and sometimes that feeling overwhelms me and begins to turn into a tear, and often that tear multiplies itself and I can no longer fight the feeling and I lose the battle。 Then somehow through either the joy or the sadness I drift and find myself asleep。 Then the dreams begin and keep me pany until my new day arrives。
When I awake it’s with such excitement because I tell myself this could be the day that every other day has led up to and the first day of the rest of my life。 I quickly don my smile because I do so want her to see me at my very best。 Then I look out the window because, even though I know it’s dawn,I still have to confirm I’ve been given another chance to find her。
And there it is…the sun, even when it’s cloudy; somehow I still see it。 And it smiles at me and I say,“Thank you,” and I smile back。
Then I ask myself,“Is this the day?” And the excitement rushes over me again。 And then I ask myself,“Where’s it going to be?”
Maybe it’ll be at the water fountain, and, unexpectedly, there I’ll find her,and much more than my thirst will be quenched。 Maybe it’ll be at the grocery store and there she’ll appear as I’m picking out fruit, and she’ll show me the difference between fresh and spoiled。 Then, from that moment, nothing that I eat will ever taste the same because she’ll bring out the simplest beauties in everything I see, taste, smell, hear,or touch。
Or maybe today will be the day when my angel brings an item up to the cash register without its price tag。 And as I wait behind this angel with all the frustrated people who are in such a hurry with their busy lives,I will find myself with such blessed extra time。 Just enough time to start a conversation with this beautiful vision standing in front of me that I might not otherwise have noticed, but, because of a “price check on register 5,” I was able to find her。
Thank you for the sun, which began my new day。 Thank you for granting me the faith when I arose this morning that I would find her in this new day。 But most of all, thank you for me not having to ever wait on another sunrise because whenever I want to see it,I will look at her and there it shall always be,in her eyes; she will forever hold it for me。
She is my sunrise,my dawn,my new day。
It is only when a seed grows that it can produce more seeds. It is only when you express joy and satisfaction in your own life that you can help others to know joy and satisfaction in their lives.
It’s no use making yourself miserable for the sake of helping others. The best way to help others is from a position of strength and fulfillment rather than from a position of weakness and despair.
The goals, dreams and desires you have are yours for a reason. They are there to show you and force you to make the most of your life.
It is not selfish to be your very best. What’s truly selfish is to let your huge potential go unrealized.
What have you always wanted to know, always wanted to have, always wanted to do, and always wanted to be? It is never too late to honestly answer this question, and to answer it with all the colorful details and passion that it deserves.
The answer to that question is your truly beautiful and unique gift to life. Never stop reaching for the best you can imagine; for when you fulfill your highest potential, you raise the whole world with you.

Extend the Miracle
my skills, my mind, my heart, and my body will stagnate, rot, and die lest I put them to good
use. I have unlimited potential. Only a small portion of my brain do I employ;
only a paltry amount of my muscles
do I flex. A hundredfold or more can I increase my accomplishments of yesterday
and this I will do, beginning today.
Nevermore will I be satisfied with yesterday's accomplishments nor will I
indulge, anymore, in self-praise for deeds which in reality are too small to
even acknowledge. I can accomplish far more than I have, and I will, for why
should the miracle which produced me end with my birth? Why can I not extend
that miracle to my deeds of today?
And I am not on this earth by chance. I am here for a purpose and that
purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth
will I apply all my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will
strain my potential until it cries for mercy.
I have been given eyes to see and a mind to think and now I know a great
secret of life for I perceive, at last, that all my problems, discouragements,
and heartaches are, in truth, great opportunities in disguise. I will no longer be fooled by the
garments they wear for mine eyes are open. I will look beyond the cloth and I
will not be deceived.

Be Happy!
“The days that make us happy make us wise.”----John
Masefield
when I first read this line by England’s Poet Laureate, it
startled me. What did Masefield mean? Without thinking about it much, I had
always assumed that the opposite was true. But his sober assurance was
arresting. I could not forget it.
Finally, I seemed to grasp his meaning
and realized that here was a profound observation. The wisdom that happiness
makes possible lies in clear perception, not fogged by anxiety nor dimmed by
despair and boredom, and without the blind spots caused by fear.
Active happiness---not mere satisfaction or contentment ---often comes
suddenly, like an April shower or the unfolding of a bud. Then you discover what
kind of wisdom has accompanied it. The grass is greener; bird songs are sweeter;
the shortcomings of your friends are more understandable and more forgivable.
Happiness is like a pair of eyeglasses correcting your spiritual
vision.
Nor are the insights of happiness limited to what is near around
you. Unhappy, with your thoughts turned in upon your emotional woes, your vision
is cut short as though by a wall. Happy, the wall crumbles.
The long vista is there for the seeing. The ground at your feet, the world
about you----people, thoughts, emotions, pressures---are now fitted into the
larger scene. Everything assumes a fairer proportion. And here is the beginning
of wisdom.
The Wholeness of Life完美的人生
Once a circle missed a wedge. The
circle wanted to be whole, so it went around looking for its missing piece. But
because it was incomplete and therefore could roll only very slowly, it admired
the flowers along the way. It chatted with worms. It enjoyed the sunshine. It
found lots of different pieces, but none of them fit. So it left them all by the
side of the road and kept on searching. Then one day the circle found a piece
that fit perfectly. It was so happy. Now it could be whole, with nothing
missing. It incorporated the missing
piece into itself and began to roll. Now that it was a perfect circle, it could
roll very fast, too fast to notice flowers or talk to the worms. When it
realized how different the world seemed when it rolled so quickly, it stopped,
left its found piece by the side of the road and rolled slowly away.
There is a wholeness about the person who has come to terms with his
limitations, who has been brave enough to let go of his unrealistic dreams and
not feel like a failure for doing so. There is a wholeness about the man or
woman who has learned that he or she is strong enough to go through a tragedy
and survive, she can lose someone and still feel like a complete
person.
