我国围棋在南北朝时进入了重要的发展期，这一时期围棋经由朝鲜传入日本，并且日本亦遵循古汉字写法将围棋写作「碁」。而在日语中，围棋叫「囲碁」或者「碁」读作「いご」（igo）或者「ご」（go）。
而真正将围棋从东方带到西方，并使其成为西方世界里大众所熟知的游戏的，是德国人奥斯卡·科歇尔特（Oscar Korschelt），他是欧洲围棋史上最重要的人物之一。他写的《围棋的理论和实践》（The Theory and Practice of Go）也在世界广为传播。
由于科歇尔特完全是在日本了解和学习的围棋，因此他对围棋的称呼直接来自日语「碁」的读音「go」。
