三寸金莲起源于前唐的李后主，直至清代的宣统皇帝。是有上千年的历史时间。处起皇太后嫔妃，下到普通百姓，文人墨客有李清照，将领有梁红玉，都裹过脚。便是清军入关，一声令下放足，终究足还仍然裹，连原先不裹足的满族人女生，也跟随喜欢上三寸金莲了。直至民国初期，倡导妇女解放运动，抵制裹足，都是通过一番猛烈抗争，在放了缠，缠了又放的过程中，在有哭有笑，寻死觅活的过程中，三寸金莲才淘汰。
美名其曰“三寸金莲”，简言之，便是裹脚。这件事情，真的是中华民族的屈辱，使中国封建社会的丑恶直露。英语里，从此有一个专业名词“footbinding”。现在的一些老外，依然拿这件事情侮辱我国。鲁迅写《狂人日记》，说在二千年的历史时间里，看到了“吃人肉”两字。裹脚，实际上就是一种超级变态的“吃人肉”。裹脚，又被称为裹小脚——即以布帛缠脚使之形变，古时候曾在汉族人中时兴。在女生尚年幼年，拿布将除大拇指外的脚指头压向脚板用劲缠裹，驱使脚指头向脚后跟看齐令脚简短，与此同时使脚板由平扁变成尖圆。
捆成的脚丫尖瘦，一些腥臭文人墨客，称其形同莲瓣而称金莲。裹脚后，一般能将脚限定在四五寸，最少者三寸，叫“三寸金莲”。裹脚后的女人，脚板乏力，站立不稳，行走困难。因此，特有文人墨客赏析这类所说病态美。裹脚这件事情，一定和男尊女卑高于一切的思想及风俗习惯建立相关；也一定与汉朝董仲舒之后，“三从四德”的贞节观占有执政影响力相关。六朝乐府中，《双行缠》其二曰：“新罗区绣行缠，足趺如春妍”。表明那时候已经有裹脚。
文学家冯骥才老先生，读过一部小说叫《三寸金莲》，发表于1986年第三期《收获》，并有实体书出版发行。该书为创作者组成小说集《怪世奇谈》的第二部，讲述了贫家女子香莲幼时裹脚，之后因“三寸金莲”之美而嫁进豪门，又在2次“赛脚”中从打入冷宫到受宠，进而变成裹脚风俗习惯维护者的小故事。书里描绘甚细，以至不忍心卒看，时刻恶心想吐，得知裹脚恶习多么的丑陋。
