The Silk Road, originated in the 1st century BC, is an international trade route of great historical significance. Because silk occupied a large proportion in the trade of this route, the famous German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen named it "Silk Road" in 1877.

丝路历史
河西走廊是丝绸之路的要道，但为何在河西走廊上没有“丝门”而有“玉门”？早在文献记述丝绸之路之前2000年，东西方文化交流的线路已经开通，但它不是为出口丝绸，而是为进口和田玉。“丝绸之路”名称是德国学者的“发明”。
19世纪末，德国地质地理学家李希霍芬在《中国》一书中，把“从公元前114年至公元127年间，中国与中亚、中国与印度间以丝绸贸易为媒介的这条西域交通道路”命名为“丝绸之路”，这一名词很快被学术界和大众所接受，并正式运用。
其后，德国历史学家郝尔曼在20世纪初出版的《中国与叙利亚之间的古代丝绸之路》一书中，根据新发现的文物考古资料，进一步把丝绸之路延伸到地中海西岸和小亚细亚，确定了丝绸之路的基本内涵，即它是中国古代经过中亚通往南亚、西亚以及欧洲、北非的陆上贸易交往的通道。

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Brussels Sunday for a state visit to Belgium, the first ever made by a Chinese head of state to the country in 27 years.
Belgium is the last leg of Xi Jinping's four-nation European trip. Before Belgium, he visited the Netherlands, France and Germany, and attended the third Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague .
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on China and Germany to work together to build the Silk Road economic belt.
Xi Jinping made the remarks during a visit to Port of Duisburg, the world's biggest inland harbor and a transport and logistics hub of Europe.
He said China's proposal of building the Silk Road economic belt, based on the idea of common development and prosperity, aims to better connect the Asian and European markets, will enrich the idea of the Silk Road with a new meaning, and benefit all the people along the belt.
The Chinese leader expressed the hope that Port of Duisburg will play a bigger role in the China-Germany and China-Europe cooperation.
