其实，英语中的这个词“Tsunami”是从日语中来的。主要原因：1946年に起きたアリューシャン地震の际、日系移民が用いたことからハワイで「Tsunami」の语が使われるようになり、アメリカでも広く用いられるようになったため、「Tsunami（津波）」は国际语となった。英语にも「津波」を表す「tidalwave」という语があるにもかかわらず「Tsunami」が用いられるのは、上记経纬のほかに、「tidal」は「潮」を意味する言叶であり、津波が満干によって起こる现象ではないためと考えられる。这是“津波”这个词的由来。上面大概说的是，1946年阿留申群岛发生地震的时候，当地的日本移民说的“Tsunami”这个词就在夏威夷被使用了，再由于在美国被广泛使用了之后，“Tsunami（津波）”这个词就被国际化了。尽管在英语中表示“津波”这个意思的说法有“tidalwave”，但是“Tsunami”这个词也在被使用。原因不光是上面讲的，还有就是“tidalwave”中的“tidal”是海潮的意思，而“津波”所表达的现象不是有潮汐所引起的。
