形成流星雨的根本原因是由于彗星的破碎而形成的。彗星主要由冰和尘埃组成。当彗星逐渐靠近太阳时冰气化，使尘埃颗粒像喷泉之水一样，被喷出母体而进入彗星轨道。但大颗粒仍保留在母彗星的周围形成尘埃彗头；小颗粒被太阳的辐射压力吹散，形成彗尾。
