农历五月初五，俗称“端午节”，端是“开端”、“初”的意思。初五可以称为端五。农历以地支纪月，正月建寅，二月为卯，顺次至五月为午，因此称五月为午月，“五”与“午”通，“五”又为阳数，故端午又名端五、重五、端阳、中天、重午、午日，此外一些地方又将端午节称之为五月节、艾节、夏节。从史籍上看，“端午”二字最早见于晋人周处《风土记》：“仲夏端午，烹鹜角黍”。端午节是我国汉族人民的传统节日。这一天必不可少的活动逐渐演变为：吃粽子，赛龙舟，挂菖蒲、艾叶，薰苍术、白芷，喝雄黄酒。端午节从2008年起为国家法定节假日。国家非常重视非物质文化遗产的保护，2006年5月20日，该民俗经国务院批准列入第一批国家级非物质文化遗产。 On the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, all Chinese celebrate one of their major traditional festivals, the Duanwu Festival, or Dragon Boat Festival. The highlights of their celebrations include eating zongzi, glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves in the shape of a pyramid, racing dragon boats and sticking mugwort leaves on their doors. It is the day when Chinese people commemorate patriot-poet Qu Yuan (340 -278 BC) drowned himself in the Milo River in despair over his country's future. Hearing of his death, people who loved Qu raced in boats to recover his body from the river and threw zongzi into it to feed the fish to keep them away from his body. zongzi: The pyramid-shaped rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves.

In fact when a "father'*'s day" was first proposed there were no Father'*'s Day cards! Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father'*'s day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd'*'s mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. The first Father'*'s Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. At about the same time in various towns and cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate a "father'*'s day." In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father'*'s Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father'*'s Day. It is one of the most important Chinese festivals, the other two being the Autumn Moon Festival and Chinese New Year. The origin of this summer festival centers around a scholarly government official named Chu Yuan. He was a good and respected man, but because of the misdeeds of jealous rivals he eventually fell into disfavor in the emperor's court. Unable to regain the respect of the emperor, in his sorrow Chu Yuan threw himself into the Mi Low river. Because of their admiration for Chu Yuan, the local people living adjacent to the Mi Lo River rushed into their boats to search for him while throwing rice into the waters to appease the river dragons. 父亲节( Father's Day)起源与20世纪初的美国。据说当时在华盛顿州有一个人，她年幼丧母，兄弟姐妹六人全靠父亲抚养成人。父亲的这种既为人父，又为人母的自我牺牲精神极大地感动了她。

长大后，她积极倡导父亲节，并说服当时华盛顿的Ministerial Society of Spokane作一次特殊的礼拜仪式向父亲们表达敬意。后来在1916年她的建议得到了Woodwork Wilson总统的官方承认。 从此父亲节便成为了美国的一项传统节日。

Father's Day originated in the United States in the early 20th century. It is said that there was a man in Washington State who lost her mother at a young age. Six brothers and sisters were raised by their father. Her father's self-sacrifice spirit of being both father and mother greatly touched her.

When she grew up, she actively advocated Father's Day and persuaded her fathers to pay tribute to a special service in Washington. Later, in 1916, her proposal was officially recognized by the President. Since then, Father's Day has become a traditional festival in the United States.

According to custom, on Father's Day, children usually get up early in the morning to make a big breakfast for their fathers and bring it to their beds to thank their fathers for their nurturing.
