名词加后缀-ic或-ical，就会变为形容词。在构成形容词的后缀中，-ic和-ical是最常见的两个。但究竟哪些形容词以-ic结尾，哪些以-ical结尾，几乎没有什么规律可循。那么以-ic与-ical结尾的形容词到底有什么区别呢？1、有时同一形容词可以具有两种不同的后缀，但在意义和用法上并无太大区别，可以互换使用。例如：tragic（al）悲惨的，悲剧的strategic（al）战略的arithmetic（al）算术的geometric（al）几何学的geographic（al）地理学的ironic（al）讽刺的autobiographic（al）自传的atmospheric（al）大气层的2、有些名词只能转化为以-ic为后缀的形容词。例如：drama戏剧，戏剧艺术dramatic戏剧的，富有戏剧性的organ机关，器官organic器官的，有机的system系统，体系systematic系统的prehistory史前史prehistoric史前的language语言linguistic语言的有些名词只能转化为以-ical为后缀的形容词。例如：grammar语法grammatical语法的lexicology词汇学lexical词汇的logic逻辑logical逻辑的music音乐musical音乐的，悦耳的clinic门诊部，诊所clinical临床的3、一般来说，当一个名词既可以接-ic又可以接-ical构成形容词时，以-ic为后缀的形容词与同根名词的关系密切，其意义紧扣名词字面的含义，表示该名词的范围；而以-ical为后缀的形容词与同根名词的关系较松弛，常表示名词的属性。例如：electric电的，带电的electriccurrent电流electrical与电有关的anelectricalengineer电气工程师economic经济的aneconomicform经济形式economical经济的，节约的aneconomicalstove经济炉，节能炉comic喜剧的，滑稽的acomicactor喜剧演员comical有趣的acomicalhat有趣的帽子historic有历史意义的，历史上著名的ahistoricstrike具有历史意义的大罢工historical历史上有过的，关于历史的ahistoricalnovel历史小说politic策略性的，考虑周全的（言行、计划），精明的（人）apoliticdecision慎重的决定political政治上的，有关政治的apoliticalparty政党4、若名词是以-ic结尾，在变为形容词时，都是-ical后缀形式。例如：skepticn．怀疑者——skepticaladj．怀疑的hereticn．异教徒——hereticaladj．异教的logicn．逻辑——logicaladj．逻辑的hystericn．歇斯底里——hystericaladj．歇斯底里的但也有例外，如public既是名词，也是形容词；panic（n．恐慌），其形容词形式为panicky。
